Three new mini excavators from Caterpillar promise improved lifting performance, easier operation and greater versatility. From the micro-sized 301 CR to the larger 302.4 CR and 302.6, there's plenty here to interest the hire sector.
Smallest of the trio, the 301 CR (pictured) is designed for confined working environments, including indoor demolition, landscaping and agricultural applications. With a maximum operating weight of 1,230kg, it can squeeze through openings measuring just 762mm wide and 1,981mm high, while its folding ROPS reduces overall height to less than 1,829mm.
An expandable undercarriage increases track width from 730mm to 1,100mm, improving stability and lifting performance. Compared with the outgoing 300.9D, lift capacity increases by more than 80%, while stick and bucket forces rise by 38% and 8% respectively. Maximum lift capacity is 394kg at a height of 0.91m and a forward radius of 1.83m.
Travel speed doubles to 3.6km/h, while a closed-loop swing system improves efficiency and reduces heat generation. Side-mounted joysticks, simplified instrumentation and an optional second auxiliary hydraulic circuit further enhance usability.
Moving up the range, the 302.4 CR features a 1,499mm-wide fixed undercarriage, providing improved stability and a lift capacity of 980kg. Maximum travel speed is 4.8km/h.
The larger 302.6 has an operating weight of 3,030kg, making it lighter than the previous 302.7 CR. Its fixed undercarriage also delivers a 40% increase in lifting capacity compared with the 302.7 CR fixed-undercarriage model.
Both larger machines benefit from improved hydraulics, increased uphill swing torque, extended service intervals and tilt-up cabs for easier maintenance access. A sealed and pressurised cab option helps reduce noise and dust ingress.
