HSE consultation on RCS exposure limits

Filed under: Latest News — EHN Team @ 9:55 am

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is undertaking a consultation on proposals to implement amendments to the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive (2004/37/EC).

This introduces or revises occupational workplace exposure limit (WEL) values for a number of carcinogens, including respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust, which can be produced by some construction tasks.

The consultation, which was launched in April, sets out the HSE’s proposals for establishing WELs for the substances contained in the amendment to the Directive, subject to the ongoing negotiations on UK’s relationship with the EU. The consultation proposes to do this by revising the HSE publication EH40/2005, Workplace Exposure Limits.

The Directive also classifies RCS as a carcinogen where it is generated as a result of a work process.

The HSE is inviting comments on the proposals. Further information on this, including the consultation document and online response form, can be found on the HSE website, www.hse.gov.uk. Consultation will close on 7 June 2019.
