Executive Report : “No better opportunity”
EHN talks to a selection of hirers about what they are looking forward to about visiting the Executive Hire Show, and why other hire professionals should ensure they attend the main event in our industry's calendar.
Jonathan Charles, right, and Mike O’Donnell from Kellaway Hire Services
"We always look forward to the Show. It enables us to see the latest products and technological developments, and we can make contacts with new suppliers.
We are continuing to refresh and expand our fleet, and we will be looking to buy some new generators, mini excavators and attachments, and we also intend to replace some vehicles
We also enjoy the social side, meeting up with industry contacts and cementing business relationships. Through attending the Show in previous years,
we have widened our network of suppliers and other hirers that we can do business with. It is good to put faces to names, and it is one of the few opportunities in the calendar to meet other like-minded hire professionals and discuss current issues."
Dave Webster and Helen Power from CV Hire Centre
"It’s always great to go to the Show and we really get a lot out of it. We are expanding our fleet all the time
to meet demand, so it is an opportunity to meet existing and new suppliers, and to see the latest equipment on the market. It is fantastic for smaller independent hirers like us, because it allows us to make contact with so many companies and talk directly with their senior staff, all in one place and in one day.
During our previous visits, we have always come back with several new fleet additions, and taken advantage of the special Show-only deals available. We recently further expanded our fleet of mini excavators and, as a result, we will be looking out for the latest compact dumpers on display at the Show, as well checking out all the other new launches."
Ray Woods of Southport Hire Centre
"Each year I really look forward to the Show. It is the main opportunity I have to look at what we can add to, or improve in, our hire fleet,
and to talk to the manufacturers and suppliers face-to-face about products I have not seen in their catalogues before.
Prior to visiting, I spend time looking at the floor plan and reading about each of the companies exhibiting. Using a colour scheme, I mark out the stands I feel I must look at and listing new products that will be of interest. However, the main thing is to go with an open mind, in order to spot unexpected launches, prototypes and other items or services that could become valuable assets. I have never been to a Show yet where I have not bought something to add to our fleet.
It is also a good chance to talk with other hirers about what is going on in the industry,
and there is no better opportunity to see and compare so many different suppliers in a short time."
Steve Hitchen of One Stop Hire
"We are really looking forward to the Show once again. I will be bringing my senior team along to view products across the board, and to engage with our key suppliers. We will be looking out for innovative products that would fit
into our fleet and meet
the needs of our customer mix.
Our financial year runs from 1 April, and we already have an idea of our capex budget for 2016/17, so we will be able to give our supply chain some reasonably accurate numbers of what we will be investing in with them. With current market conditions being buoyant, and the 2016 calendar year looking very positive, we expect investment to be strong in the traditional alloy, low level and powered access categories, and we are already seeing more demand for small groundworks and concreting equipment as well."
of Smiths Equipment Hire
"The Show is ideal for seeing the latest products and to identify new opportunities that our business should be exploring. It is focused directly on our market and you can see what your current suppliers are launching. Manufacturers are introducing and improving products constantly and it is vital to keep in touch. Also, I have been looking at the floor plan and, with so many new exhibitors this year, hirers can make contact with companies they might be unfamiliar with, who are offering interesting new equipment that will be well worth studying.
Many suppliers have reduced the number of reps they have on the road,
so the Show enables you to make contact with them directly. It’s also beneficial from a networking and socialising perspective, allowing you to compare your experiences against those of other hirers. Being held at the start of the year, you can gauge the current state of the market and to consider new industry trends.
These are exciting times for Smiths. We will be opening our new Liverpool depot around the time of the Show, so we will be on the lookout for items we can add for its fleet, and throughout our operation generally."
of Mather and Stuart
"Amongst the many reasons why I enjoy attending the Show is its close proximity to us as
a north west-based company, and its excellent accessibility for most of the population, with good transport links and more than ample car parking facilities.
We are a generator hire and sales company, and many of the exhibitors in this category are suppliers of ours.
I can genuinely get to see them all in less than one day, without the need to see a chiropodist afterwards, as the venue is
well laid out, compact and not too challenging on the feet.
The Show is also fantastic for networking with manufacturers and potential clients and, generally, enjoying the camaraderie amongst fellow plant and equipment hirers."
Bill Leaver from Hire Station
"The Executive Hire Show is a fantastic meeting place for our industry. It brings together suppliers, colleagues and competitors from all over the country,
and allows you to keep in touch with developments.
It is easy to spend the whole day there, viewing the latest innovative equipment on the many stands, including existing
and new suppliers. The most enjoyable aspect is that you can meet old industry contacts and representatives of companies that you have dealt with for far too many years to remember."
Matthew Claridge of Traction Equipment (Stafford)
"One of the main reasons I attend the Show is that I’m passionate about hire and
I like to participate in the industry, rather than be a spectator of it.
Last year, I saw several items of interest, which we have since added to our hire fleet. The Show gives me the chance to see some old faces, and it is always a good way of introducing our company to exhibitors, so that I can create, build and sustain mutually beneficial and profitable relationships through personal and organisational contact.
The passion that the Executive Hire Show team puts into the event, as well as the Regional Road Shows throughout the year, gives us all something to look forward to, and there is always the opportunity to seek out some good deals."
Richard Fairfield and Marcus Gunning from ET Hire
"The Show will give us the opportunity to visit our main suppliers and partners, whilst keeping an eye out for any new initiatives that we can pursue. It is an excellent way of keeping up-to-date with what is happening in the industry and for catching up with old friends. It really is well worth the
time and effort.
2015 was a year of very strong growth for us, with the establishment of a new Hire and Assemble Aluminium Access Division. For 2016 we have strengthened our management team with the appointment of a new Director of Operations, and we have an extremely exciting
12 months planned ahead of us."
Gary Derraven of Phoenix Hire & Sales
"I’m really looking forward to visiting the Show, as last year’s event had a great buzz and there are even more exhibitors this time.
We’re also looking to release as many staff as possible to visit the Show this year, including drivers and fitters, as well as managers. After all it’s just as much their industry and their futures, and they deserve to see the full picture."
Andy Buckley from
Fast Hire & Sales
"There really is no other show in the UK purely focused on the tool and equipment hire industry,
so it is ideal for seeing the latest products on the market that we might add to the fleet, checking out potential new suppliers
and meeting up with other hire professionals.
I also take the opportunity to explore
new equipment and franchise opportunities that we could benefit
from in further developing our growing sales business."
Chris Comer of Artisan Hire
"The Show is a great opportunity to see suppliers and talk to like-minded hirers, sharing ideas and finding out what’s new. We can check out all the latest products on the market and start planning our spending on equipment for the next
12 months. I like the atmosphere of the Ricoh Arena and the fact that hirers and suppliers can all get together in one place. I am also very much looking forward to the 10th Show Party in the evening, which will be a fantastic chance to network with other industry professionals."
Abdulkareem Hatem of B&G Tool Hire & Repair
"The Show is fantastic because it allows you to see all the major suppliers in one place and to make purchasing decisions. One of the items I am looking to buy this year is another mini excavator, and the Show is the best opportunity to gather all the necessary information.
We are all under pressure with our daily workloads,
but time spent at the exhibition is very worthwhile for considering future plans and possibilities. Attending the Show and getting away from the day-to-day grind is a great mix of business and pleasure, and I really enjoy it."
Gareth Hayward from Alide Hire Services
"The Show is the highlight of the industry’s year. We spend two full days there, catching up with suppliers and seeing new products to add to the hire fleet that will benefit our business.
We gear our annual spend around the Show, formulating a plan for the next financial year. With the steady upturn in the economy and an overall mood of confidence, customers should continue to start new projects and there should be a very positive atmosphere
at the Show."
