Forum: Show your passion

You don’t need this Forum to tell you that the past 12 months have been difficult. As our annual Tool Hire Top Ten article starting on page 15 reports, hirers have taken measures to adapt to recessionary conditions, cutting capital expenditure, reducing fleets and shedding staff. Nevertheless, we also detect the signs of expansion, notably amongst hirers owned by builders’ merchants, suggesting a more positive element.

A new year and, indeed, the first Forum of a new decade, brings new opportunities and the chance to look forward - which is precisely what hirers demonstrate in our latest ‘Taking Our Industry’s Pulse’ series of articles beginning on page 10. Passionate independents from across the country tell us that, while 2009 was “challenging” or “difficult”, their loyal customer bases of tradesmen, small builders and homeowners have, on the whole, continued to hire.

SEE ALL THE LATEST KIT

Another strong, common message amongst these hire professionals is the belief that 2010 will be better: that mothballed sites must re-open, banks will start lending, and more new homes will be built. Even more significant, however, is their enthusiasm for next week’s Executive Hire Show as the best opportunity to see all the latest kit in one place, meet industry colleagues, explore new markets, find new suppliers - and, generally, look forward. Readers will identify with Crosshire when he remarks in his column on page 56, that many hirers who cut back on spending for their fleets last year simply have to replenish and refresh them now.

The Executive Hire Show takes on an even greater significance following the shock announcement that SED, scheduled for May, has been postponed until 2011. This decision makes the Executive Hire Show the only UK plant exhibition scheduled before the summer. Since EHN announced in November its acquisition of the assets of PHE Plant Hire Executive, we have increased our circulation by almost exactly 4,000 additional contractor’s plant hirers who used to receive PHE, in our belief that they will enjoy reading about the latest developments in our hire industry - particularly at a time of change and challenge.

While we accept that SED would normally be many plant hire professionals’ trade show of choice, the Executive Hire Show also gives them the ideal New Year opportunity to look ahead with confidence. So many long-established plant names are supporting our event, including JCB, Takeuchi, Thwaites, Ammann, Wacker Neuson, along with other key hire industry suppliers like ArcGen Hilta, Stihl, Seddons, Hilti, Imer and Indespension, to name but a few. As Crosshire points out, exhibitors like these have the products that hirers need, and are ready to do business.

Whether your hire market is providing tools, equipment or plant, there will be no better platform than the Executive Hire Show from which to set out your company’s agenda for 2010. Just one day taken out of your schedule to go to the centrally located Ricoh Arena in Coventry could make all the difference, by finding new product opportunities and revenue streams. Our Preview of the exhibition in this issue, together with individual exhibitor profiles, highlights just some of the exciting and innovative product launches that can be seen for the first time at the Show. We also mention some of the special offers from exhibitors that will be only available to visitors during the two days of the event.

In our ‘Taking Our Industry’s Pulse’ article, one hirer sums up the current situation succinctly: “There are two ways we can approach 2010. Having enjoyed the Christmas break, we can either return to work refreshed with a list of goals and positive plans for the year, or we can just think, here comes more of the same. I am already looking forward to 2010 in a positive manner. I will attend the Show and will be encouraging colleagues to do the same.”

Show similar passion for our industry. By reading this issue of Executive Hire News, you will see the positive opportunities it highlights and learn about the new products and services being launched at the Show which could transform your business, whatever hire market you serve. Register for the exhibition NOW at www.executivehireshow.com to ensure your attendance.

The future starts here - the rest is up to you.
