EHS Preview : Show sets the scene
Next month's Executive Hire Show will enable hirers to find out about the latest industry developments and plan positively for the year ahead. Our preview focuses on some of the exciting new products being unveiled.
Wacker Neuson machines make their debut
New from Wacker Neuson is the 2404 mini excavator, previewed in our article on the manufacturer in November, which will be receiving its UK debut. It will be shown fitted with the company’s Vertical Digging System for enhanced performance on uneven terrain, plus a re-designed cab for improved access and visibility.
Also being seen for the first time in this country will be the latest Pure Heat system, which can be used for heating either the ground only, or the interior of buildings, to allow construction work to continue in cold conditions. The latest Wacker Neuson hand-held standard drill and breaker drill will be on view, designed for light weight and ease of handling, together with a selection of Compact and Light equipment.
DeWalt powers ahead
DeWalt’s main launch will be a range of low-vibration 6kg SDS-Max hammers. They are lighter, more powerful, and easier to service due to a newly designed oil bath gearbox and chain drive, which also dissipates heat more quickly. Two new low-vibration 2kg SDS-Plus hammers will be unveiled, one having an in-line design, while the other has an ergonomic L-shaped configuration.
Also launched will be three dust extraction options for SDS-plus hammers. A basic mains system attaches to the end of the drill and is connected to a vacuum, while another mains powered unit features integral dust collection. An integrated solution for cordless 36V hammers completes the trio. Information will also be given on a forthcoming range of heavy-duty impact drill bits and hole saws.
Briggs & Stratton’s food for thought
Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power is sponsoring the Show breakfast area. Every visitor will receive a Vanguard Voucher upon registration, entitling them to one free breakfast at the Briggs Breakfast Bap zone near the main entrance.
The manufacturer will launch a new range of single cylinder Vanguard engines, designed for high performance. Paul Bramhall, Senior Product Category Manager, says, “By listening to customers and working with OEMs, we have developed an engine series that will raise the standard of dependability on the toughest job sites.” Visitors can win prizes in a competition on the stand, including a flat screen TV, iPods, and hand arm vibration meters from HAVi, who will also be represented on the stand.

As an incentive to attend the Show, Sumner is offering all visitors to its stand a 10% discount voucher, redeemable until 31 May, against the purchase of any of the company’s lifts, accessories and material handling carts.
inspHire’s digital solution
inspHire will be launching Digital Pen Technology, a sophisticated variation on the pen and paper concept, which works by capturing information written by a digital pen and transmitting the data via a bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to a hirer’s inspHire system. This provides an exact, printable image of the document plus any handwritten additions, such as damage details.
“Not only can our customers save time and money on both filing and retrieving signed documents, they also get a confirmation in the system almost immediately, knowing what time equipment was delivered or collected,” says Graham Dobbs, MD of inspHire.
For the third year running, the company will host its quarterly Office Edition User Forum during the Show, and customers visiting the exhibition are also invited to register for inspHire Masterclass Sessions being held on both days. Also having a presence on the stand will be erento, the on-line hire marketplace, which has a partnership agreement with inspHire enabling users to take any on-line enquiries directly from the erento web site, and to quickly upload product information to it.
Extra lift from Euro Towers
Euro Towers will launch its Eurolift compact push-around scissor lift, which fits through standard doorways and has a low platform entry point. The UK-manufactured, CE-marked product has an integral toeboard and incorporates an automatic braking system. It has a powder coated finish and can be supplied with personalised branding. MD Roger Verallo told EHN, “We have taken a larger stand at the 2010 Show to demonstrate our confidence about the year ahead, and to support the event which, in turn, supports our industry.”
Camon gets ready to rock
Camon Tracmaster will launch a cost-effective and manoeuvrable compact rock crusher, along with a new spring-tined lawn rake and a fully hydraulic 13hp rotavator.
Given the recent wintry weather, the company will exhibit a snow thrower that attaches to the C8 rotavator. Camon will also hold a prize draw to win a hot air balloon flight, along with special Show-only offers.
MCS to launch dashboard monitor
Hire software supplier, MCS, will unveil new real-time dashboard technology for its MCS-rm software, designed to give instant graphical views of a company’s key performance indicators. Information can be displayed in a range of graphical formats, such as pie charts, gauges and bar charts. Data can be filtered across an entire organisation or by depot, business activity or product range.
Sales Manager Nick Thomson says, “Dashboards can be used to measure the performance of depots week-on-week, ensuring revenue targets are regularly met. Multiple reports are consolidated into one single page view, allowing instant recognition of the status of the business.” The MCS-rm software offers dashboards for several business areas including Hire Revenue & Equipment Utilisation, CRM and MCS-Financials.

It incorporates shock-absorbent castors and a heavy-duty battery. The Pop-Up model will also be displayed with the auto-brake system, which is available as a kit for retro-fitment to existing machines in hirers’ fleets.
Smart solution from RentalSpec
Making its Show debut, RentalSpec Products will launch a diverse equipment range, including the Smart Trolley, designed to enable the weight of a breaker to be fully supported in operation, thus reducing manual handling issues. By allowing ‘hands-off’ operation and incorporating supplementary vibration dampening, it also reduces HAV risks and increases working time.
The company, which offers an in-house design and manufacturing capability, says it aims to establish a comprehensive product range by working with international manufacturers and suppliers, who wish to penetrate the UK hire market.
Essential DURO range
DURO will unveil its Essential selection of blades. The range comprises the supplier’s five fastest moving products and is designed to enable hirers to offer a solution to cover virtually all commonly encountered materials. New packaging, point of sale items and supporting literature are also provided to maximise sales opportunities. Also being introduced at the Show is a new and improved Ultra Rippa blade, designed for enhanced performance on a wider range of materials and applications.
Clean running from Cawdell
Cawdell Group’s new Sutbusta exhaust purification device is a self-contained diesel particulate filter, combined with an oxidation catalyst, that is claimed to reduce soot and other particulates by 90%, and noxious gases by 80%, allowing machines to operate safely in confined areas.
The device has a flexible pipe that can be quickly connected to a machine’s exhaust tailpipe, or the unit can be mounted on the equipment. The Sutbusta’s filter is cleaned typically after every 40 hours of operation by connecting it to an electric outlet for four hours. No power is required, however, while the unit is in use.
SPE to launch compact grinder
SPE International’s new DFG 200 is a compact single head machine, developed as an introductory model to the DFG floor grinder range. The single phase electric machine fits into the boot of a car and can be fitted with various diamond, polymer and PCD attachments for tasks such as grinding concrete surfaces, removing floor coatings and adhesives, or polishing terrazzo tiles and frost damaged slabs.
The DFG 200 incorporates a 50mm dust extraction port for connection to a suitable SPE vacuum, and removable weights allow the grinding pressure to be adjusted. Large diameter wheels are fitted for mobility and stability.
Youngman launches lighting towers
Youngman Group has chosen the Executive Hire Show to announce its entry into the lighting tower market, with the launch of Ecolite, a two-model range. The Ecolite T and P combine energy efficient, ceramic discharge lighting with patented prismatic lenses to produce light free from flickering and glare, and the power units are claimed to offer fuel savings of up to 80% compared with conventional models. Four die-cast aluminium lighting heads are mounted on the 9m hydraulic mast, which uses biodegradable fluid. Dusk-to-dawn auto-switching is available.
The Ecolite T is a braked, trailer-mounted unit with a bunded base and features automatic lowering of the mast if the handbrake is released. The Ecolite P is housed in a 1.2m by 1.2m insulated steel casing, incorporating a four-way entry pallet base, facilitating use at locations where security is an issue.
Youngman is exhibiting two additional X-Series powered access machines. The Boss X2 has a two-section scissor and reaches its full 2.01m platform height in ten seconds. Also new is the X3X which, like the X3 model launched last year, has a three-scissor configuration, but its longer scissors give a maximum platform height of 3.2m without the need for additional stabilisers. It is 0.65m higher than the X3, which will be on display with an auto-brake system. Youngman will also promote a new, patented advance guard rail system called Boss Cam-Lock, designed for simple operation.
Easy cover from CPA
CPA’s new Hire Cover Plus insurance enables members to arrange cover in situations where a new customer does not wish to insure hired plant themselves, or perhaps when an existing client does not want to be responsible for any loss or damage.
Basic cover under the scheme, which is arranged through Oval Insurance Broking Ltd, insures hirers for loss or damage to their own, and crosshired, equipment whilst hired out to customers, with a loss or damage waiver. This latter aspect is an agreement between a hirer and the client, which removes the insurer’s usual right to recover their costs of loss or damage through enforcement of CPA’s hire conditions.
The insurance can cover any one item up to £100,000, and is limited to £200,000 for any one occurrence. Policies can be arranged quickly, and hirers can include a charge for the waiver in addition to the usual hire rate, providing extra revenue opportunities.
Reactec’s HAV solution
Reactec, exhibiting at the Show for the first time, offers the HAVmeter system. It is designed to allow workers to monitor their own HAV exposure, whilst providing management teams with an accurate record of important data. Each tool is fitted with a tag, programmed with details of hand-held equipment’s vibration output. At the start of a shift, operators swipe a personalised card through the base station, which automatically assigns them a HAVmeter that they keep with them throughout the working day.
The meter is then attached to the tool by a strong magnetic connection with the tool tag, and it provides a real-time reading of cumulative vibration exposure. It also has a ‘traffic light’ warning display based on the HSE’s points system. Upon returning the HAVmeter to the base station, the collected information is downloaded automatically in a tamper-proof format. The system has already been adopted by A-Plant, GAP and Speedy.
Static attraction from SMC
SMC, the manufacturer of the popular TL-90 mobile site lighting tower, is introducing the static SL-90 model, which shares approximately 75% common parts. It is designed for use at semi-permanent locations, or where site security is an issue. Both machines can be fitted with AutoRun, whereby the tower can be pre-set to switch on and off automatically, at times determined by the user. “AutoRun will solve many operational problems and save users a great deal of money in the process,” says UK and Export Sales Manager, Iain Curran.
The company has also developed a new, hinged engine compartment for the machines, offering improved access for inspection and maintenance of the engine, alternator, air filter and fan belt.
Gray Campling’s strong Performance
Gray Campling will unveil the Performance series of electric airless paint sprayers from Titan, which supersede the existing Intelligent line-up. Entry-level machines incorporate lower-cost pumps without compromising performance, while larger models have improved brushless motors and electronic pressure controls.
The 450e is replacing the 440i unit, the biggest selling machine of its kind in the UK. It has the same motor as its predecessor, as well as an upgraded fluid section. The warranty on the Performance models has been extended by an additional 12 months compared with the previous machines, to a period of three years.
Seddons’ shop of opportunities
Seddons and its sister company, Brownpower, will create a hire shop on its stand, complete with a workshop to demonstrate the scope of equipment, engines and parts they can supply. A new 3000psi Taskman pressure washer will be launched complete with an Interpump end, heavy-duty lance and 10m of high-pressure hose, offered to hirers for under £1,000.
Honda Power Equipment will highlight its latest EU30i compact inverter generator, which is a finalist in the Energy Zone at the exhibition, and will present a Parts & Engine workshop. Seddons’ line-up will include Winget, MBW and Norton Clipper products, and the stand design will provide access to the adjacent stand occupied by Stihl, whose display will comprise equipment available from Seddons.
Bright ideas from Tower Light
Amongst the latest products to be displayed by Tower Light will be the Hydropowercube, which has a vertical telescopic mast reaching a maximum height of 8.5m, and is secured via four stabilisers. The mast is hydraulically raised by a single lever and can rotate through 340°. Illumination is provided by four 1000watt metal halide lamps, and the 1500rpm diesel engine can provide 9kVA of auxiliary power.
Environmentally friendly products on show will include the Solar Light which can, under the correct conditions, run for almost seven hours on a single charge. Illumination comes from 18 LED lamps on a 7m mast. Tower Light will also display the VT-1+eco, derived from the popular VT-1 lighting tower, which has been selected as a finalist in the Energy Zone at the Show.
ArcGen Hilta highlights innovation
Innovation will be a strong theme on ArcGen Hilta’s stand, where two new products will be unveiled. One is the EcoWeld 300 diesel welder generator, which is a finalist in the Energy Zone at the Show. The other newcomer, however, is being kept under wraps until the exhibition opens, with Chief Executive Mark Hodgkins saying only that “it should add ‘spark’ to the welding equipment currently available in the UK.
“In these difficult trading times it is vital to continue to look for product innovation and improvement. The Show is an important event, at this time, to get our news and message across to a large number of people. We will also be promoting our established Weldmaker range, featuring the 300 AVC, which won the Award for Environmental Innovation at the exhibition two years ago, as well as the Ultra Silent DCA 25USEI generator.”
Hilta pumps and pressure washers will be displayed, including the Drysite D5 diaphragm and the 250-gallon capacity Bowser. BBA pumps will be included, together with ArcGen Hilta’s lighting tower and Imago (formerly Addco) variable messaging boards - which will be guiding Show visitors from the Ricoh Arena car parks into the main hall.
Stihl’s latest line-up
Stihl’s line-up will include its TS 410 cut-off saw, which has a low vibration rating, enabling it to be used throughout a normal eight-hour working day without exceeding prescribed limits. It has a long-life air filter system and is fitted as standard with a water connection for effective dust suppression.
From its landscape and garden care range, the manufacturer will show its latest professional cordless hedge trimmers. The HSA 65 and HSA 85 can cut through branches up to 22mm thick and their batteries provide a run time of up to 45 minutes.
Innovative r2 Access prototype
r2 Access Platforms plans to display a prototype compact scissor lift manufactured by Custom Equipment Inc of the US, which also makes the HB-1030CE and HB-1430 CE aerial work platforms. It will have approximate dimensions of 112cm long and 76cm wide, and is said to utilise exceptionally strong steel tubing in the scissor mechanism for rigidity. It also has a manual slide-out deck, extending the work platform to 160cm, and active pothole protection is standard, allowing the operator to fully raise the platform without requiring manually operated out-riggers. The prototype weighs approximately 400kg.
