Havwoods launches increased range

Havwoods Machinery has substantially increased the breadth of its range of equipment and consumables for all aspects of floor installation and maintenance.“Alongside machines and tools for work associated with wood flooring, such as Kunzle & Tasin sanders, we now offer a wide range of items for laying carpet and vinyl coverings,” Havwoods’ Tim Devenish told EHN. “These include hand tools like scrapers and paddle mixers, as well as products like the new RCT Magnum Shear, which acts like a guillotine for instantly cutting floor tiles made of vinyl, carpet and resilient materials. We believe it is an ideal hire product.
“We are also distributing Pullman Ermator dust extractors. These include the popular S1300 model and the S1400, which is particularly suitable for capturing very fine wood particles. Also available in this range is the A600 air cleaner, which can be left running in a room to continuously filter the workplace environment.”
Other new products include the Roberts range of jamb saws, electric tools that can be used to quickly undercut doors in situ. Havwoods, which has just published its latest catalogue, also supplies machines like nailers, mitre saws and compressors, as well as consumables.

New Makita concrete planer

Makita’s new PC5001C 125mm concrete planer has an offset diamond wheel and is designed to remove high spots or ridges from poured flooring. Powered by a 1,450watt, 110V motor, the tool has a front roller and planer guide for easy control, and runs at up to 10,000rpm. It has an integral dust bag and can also be connected to Makita’s 446L dust extractor, which is a class L wet or dry machine suitable for concrete dust collection.
The manufacturer’s LS0714L slide compound mitre saw can be used to cut flooring timber to a maximum depth of 50mm. A laser line marker facilitates operation. Where established timber flooring has to be cut for alterations or repair, the SP6000K1 165mm plunge saw can be used. It drives the circular saw blade downwards through the flooring, with the motor body held securely in the housing and baseplate. The tool gives a maximum cut of 55mm at 90°.

SPE gives versatility

SPE’s DFG700 planetary floor grinder is intended for general floor preparation tasks and can also be fitted with optional polishing attachments. Designed to be robust enough for hire industry usage, the machine is typically used with three bolt-on diamond grinding plates, each having 10, 16 or 20 segments. These are the same plates as used on the manufacturer’s DFG250 and DFG500 machines, meaning that hirers do not need to stock different types.
The grinding heads are supported by flexible couplings to enable the machine to be used on uneven surfaces without causing damage to the drive system. The power to the grinding heads is transferred through a heavy-duty gearbox via a substantial central machined gear wheel, and then on to the individual grinding heads. The drive belts are easily accessible and can be changed quickly.
SPE reports that customers find the DFG 700 particularly suitable for the preparation of concrete floors areas because it leaves a uniform finish that is free from swirls, ready for a coating to be applied. It adds that good results can also be achieved by using polycrystalline diamond (PCD) attachments for the removal of levelling compounds, self-levelling epoxy and thick adhesives.
The manufacturer’s line-up also includes the VAC138 dust control vacuum, a three motor machine designed for tackling high volumes of dust generated by surface preparation work on concrete floors. It can be connected directly to equipment or used with a wand and floor tool for general industrial cleaning applications.

HTC’s optimum solution

HTC says that its Superprep system can be used to achieve the optimum degree of surface grinding for a particular application.
By fitting the appropriate diamond segments to one of the manufacturer’s machines, the user can coarsely grind hard and soft concrete, or remove old floor coatings such as glue, epoxy, putty, carpeting, linoleum or paint, without adversely affecting the underlying surface.
The company says that a smooth surface finish can be obtained, avoiding the need to use self-levelling compounds or other filler materials to remove irregularities, saving time and increasing efficiency.

Fein increases its vacuum line-up

Fein has added two new models to its Dustex range of wet and dry vacuum cleaners. The Dustex 25 is the successor to the Dustex II, while the Dustex 40 is the first machine from the manufacturer to offer a capacity of 35 litres. Designed for low noise, both feature electronic speed regulation with an LED display, as well as a soft start function. They also incorporate bypass cooling which, in the event of the filter becoming clogged, ensures that the motor is still supplied with cool air.
The machines can be used as standalone appliances or as dust suction accessories for power tools, and their 5m suction hoses and 6m connection cables give a large working radius. Eight large guide wheels enhance manoeuvrability.
Weighing 7kg, the Dustex 25 has a 24-litre container, a power consumption of 1,300watts and a maximum air throughput of 3300 litres/minute. The Dustex 40 has a 1,500watt electric motor, provides an airflow of up to 3600 litres/minute and weighs 9kg.

Coo-Var’s bright finish

A solvent-free epoxy coating from Coo-Var was recently used on a factory floor renovation project in Hull. After using a planer to prepare the surface, the area was abraded with a captive shot blasting system before diamond grinding equipment was used around the periphery.
Profloor Plus paint was then applied to the surface, using rollers in the main area and brushes round the edges. Once the base and hardener have been mixed, the product gives a working time of 20-30 minutes. It is designed to give a hard, smooth gloss finish, and an aggregated additive can be incorporated in order to create anti-slip walkways.

Tackle dust with HSC

The range of Dustless Technologies accessories available from The Hire Supply Company can be used to extract dust created during various tasks associated with surface preparation and floor maintenance. These include the Dust Hoodie and Dust Buddie, which are designed for use on angle grinders with cupped diamond wheels for grinding concrete floors.
Also offered is the Dustie-RO, a dust extraction shroud that fits onto random orbital sanders. Originally developed for the marine industry, it can be used for tasks in many other market segments. The Dustless Technologies line-up also includes several wet and dry vacuum systems.

Toughness from Toolpak

Manufactured in the US, Toolpak’s floor sanding sheets incorporate a double- layer phenolic bond to prevent overheating and to resist tearing at high speeds. The company’s range also includes edging discs, belts, grinding blocks, wire brushes and dust bags.
Beaver Tool Hire of Chichester stocks a variety of the supplier’s coated abrasives, including sanding sheets, belts and discs. “Toolpak provides a broad range of products, which is very convenient from a buyer’s perspective,” said General Manager John Baggott. “The sanding sheets in particular are popular with our customers and, being tough and hard wearing, they represent great value for money.”

Powerful Hilti vacuum

Hilti offers a range of dust removal systems designed to permit floor care and surface preparation work to be carried out in inhabited rooms or in dust sensitive environments, such as hospitals.
The VC 40 vacuum cleaner can be used in conjunction with tools in the manufacturer’s diamond cutting, grinding and slitting tools. Its universal filter is made of polyester, enabling the product to be used for wet and dry applications, and it is designed so that no dust can escape from the tank while changing it. The machine is rated as giving class M performance, collecting fine particles.
An automatic filter cleaning system is incorporated. Every 15 seconds the valve opens and the air flow is reversed for a matter of milliseconds three times, shaking the filter. The machine also has a soft start function and an automatic level switch ensures the product stops when the tank is full. Although having a compact design, the VC 40 has a net capacity of 25 litres owing to the location of the hose connection in the suction head.

Heavy-duty Truvox line-up

Truvox International emphasises that specialist equipment is required for work involved in the replacement of worn synthetic floor coverings.
The manufacturer’s range includes the Cimex Heavy Duty line-up of rotary machines, which incorporate three rotating elements. These can be fitted with a variety of grinding heads for the removal of adhesives, screeds and, even, concrete prior to a new surface being installed.
Extra ballast weights can be attached to the machines for even more aggressive surface scarification, and brush attachments can also be used to enable various cleaning tasks to be undertaken.
