Executive Report : More from Midland

Midland Power Machinery is poised for growth and sees the hire industry as an increasingly important market.

Since its formation 37 years ago, Worcester-based Midland Power Machinery Distributors Ltd has steadily established a broad portfolio of equipment, consumables and replacement parts. The operation is now set to expand further as new partners have joined the business, alongside former Sales Director David Morris and the existing workforce of approximately 30, following the recent retirement of founders Ian Fidoe and Barry Goode. Additional funding is now in place to explore new opportunities.

“Many hirers know us through our Power Mec brand, under which we offer a wide selection of machinery,” says National Accounts Manager, John McGhee. “We source products to suit specific applications and niche markets, including machines that are robust enough to meet the rigours of use in the hire industry. We offer gardening and landscaping products such as stump grinders, turf cutters, flail mowers, aerators and scarifiers, and we see huge potential for the log splitters in our line-up, given the rising cost of fuel and interest in greener alternatives.

“The Power Mec portfolio also includes construction equipment such as half-bag cement mixers, including petrol and electric versions.
We have sold these for several years, and sales to hirers are increasing steadily. Compaction plates are also offered.

“In addition, we are the sole UK distributor for petrol engines and power products made by Lifan, an innovative manufacturer achieving very high quality standards. The engine range available comprises 16 models from 2.5-13hp and these can be fitted as cost-effective replacements on many machines in a typical hire fleet, from mixers to mowers. Other Lifan products that we offer include pumps and pressure washers. We also hold extensive stocks of spares for all these machines, as we do for any item that we have in our range, along with full technical advice and backup. We know how important availability and rapid supply are to hirers,” says John McGhee.

This commitment to spare parts supply also extends to consumables and non-original components for a large and diverse range of engines, grounds care machines and construction equipment made by many different manufacturers. “We source high-quality components from all over the world. In this way, we can be a single source of supply for hirers, by providing the spares they need as well as new equipment. More and more companies are expressing interest in this area, as they seek to lengthen the working life of fleet items before they need replacement, for maximum cost-effectiveness.”

Full details of the equipment range, as well as the consumables and spares available, are given on the company’s web site. Registered users can order on-line and take advantage of promotions and discounts such as reduced carriage costs. Items ordered by 3pm can usually be delivered the following day. “We are adding to the site constantly, with details of parts and catalogue numbers for the rapid identification of components needed for servicing or repairing equipment.” A printed catalogue, which was officially launched at the Executive Hire Show in February, is also available.

“Many hirers tell us they are amazed by the breadth of our range when they see the catalogue or check the web site. Whenever any of our sales teams visits a company, there is invariably something that we can interest them in. And they are reporting that a positive market still exists, amongst both national hire groups and independents. Our experience is that, while remaining cautious in the current economic climate, hirers are still prepared to buy what they need to keep their fleet up to date and in good condition.” •
