JCB blades with an Edge

JCB has joined forces with Edge Diamond of Derby to develop a range of diamond blades and wet and dry core drills. Two new additions were launched at SED last month. The MUT5 sintered blade has a continuous turbo-shaped diamond rim and is suitable for cutting most materials encountered on UK building sites. It is designed for fast performance and low segment wear. In recent tests it successfully dry-cut hard concrete, red brick, sandstone, roofing tiles, cast iron pipes, engineering bricks and, even, timber. It is available in 230, 300 and 350mm diameters.

As its name suggests, the Silent blade has been developed for low levels of noise and vibration. It incorporates two steel cores joined together to virtually eliminate the whistle, whine, and the vibration noises usually emitted by the steel body of a diamond blade when rotating at high speed.

HSC goes Dustless

The Hire Supply Company offers the Dustless wet and dry vacuum cleaner and attachments.
The product has been specifically designed to handle extremely fine dust created by concrete, stone, fibreglass and drywall panels, and to ensure that collected debris is contained securely.

It has a 23,000rpm motor and features primary and secondary filters, with the option of an additional micro pre-filter and a HEPA grade filter. The user can switch from wet to dry operation without changing the filters, and there is no need to remove the lid to clean them. Accessories include the DustBuddie for use with hand grinders, the DustHoodie for floor grinders, the FlatBoy which fits sanding discs, the BitBuddie for drills, the PaintBuddie to collect paint chips, and the Turbo Drywall Sander which captures dust while sanding.

Latest Hilti drill systems

Last month, Hilti launched the DD 110-D diamond drill coring system, an improved version of the DD 100-D. It is lighter in weight, has a 1,600watt motor designed for cool running and offers speeds of up to 1,360rpm. Its slim design gives easier access in awkward areas and facilitates work overhead. The tool has a built-in dust extractor head for connection to a Hilti vacuum cleaner.

At SED last month, the company showed its new DD 350 diamond coring system for use with 52-500mm diameter bits, and offering a speed range of 226-667rpm. The 3,500watt single-phase motor has ten gears for high performance, and a service indicator light gives early warning of maintenance requirements.

Stihl saw targets emissions

Designed for environmental friendliness, the engine on Stihl’s TS 410 cut-off saw incorporates four-channel technology and ‘stratified scavenging’. Clean air is injected between the burned charge in the combustion chamber and the mix in the crankcase to prevent fresh fuel escaping with the exhaust. This reduces fuel consumption by up to 20% compared with a conventional two-stroke engine.

A long-life air filter typically needs replacement only once a year, and a water attachment facility is incorporated. The hose is recessed into the machine casing and the inlet features a quick-release coupling with a flexible mount. A 10-litre pressurised water container is available for work away from a static supply, and the saw can be fitted to the dedicated FW 20 cart. Stihl has also introduced HP Ultra, a clean burning, biodegradable two-stroke oil designed for high-performance engines such as the TS 410’s.

SPE’s compact performer

SPE International says that the 110V version of its CS230 compact floor saw is proving popular with hirers serving flooring contractors. It is designed for use with diamond blades to provide rapid joint cutting and chasing of floor slabs and screeds. The machine can be fitted with a single blade, or with two blades spaced up to 40mm apart. The guard is fully articulating, giving the ability to float and enabling dust-free operation when used in conjunction with an SPE vacuum, even when raising or lowering the blade in and out of the cut. The CS230 is also available in 415V and petrol versions.

Toolpak plans autumn blade launch

Toolpak is to launch a new diamond products line-up this autumn, targeted at hirers. It will include three ranges of blades with different performance levels, designed for optimum speed of cut and durability within various price bands.

The company’s existing DBX turbo blades are designed to cut many common construction materials, from soft blocks to hard engineering bricks, and the DBX01 has a 15mm segment height for long product life. Also available are CRX blades, which have a continuous rim and are designed for the fast cutting of granite and other hard materials.

WorkPoint benches tackle dust

WorkPoint Environmental manufactures workbenches that incorporate a ventilated surface to remove airborne dust. Air is drawn down and away from the operator’s face, through an internal filter in the bench and then returned as clean air into the workplace. The company says this downdraught principle takes advantage of the natural tendency of particles to fall downwards, rather than using overhead systems.

The AirBench comes with EU4 grade filters designed for easy cleaning, and it runs off a standard 13A electrical supply. WorkPoint believes the product is ideal for tool hire workshop staff that are responsible for maintaining floor sanders, disc cutters and similar power tools.

Spectrum offers the Ultimate

The Ultimate range is a new line-up of diamond blades from Spectrum Diamond Tools, part of the Hilbor group. The company reports that, over the last two years, it has enjoyed strong sales to builders and plumbers merchants, and that it is now targeting the hire industry with this flagship range.

Blades are certified by the Organisation for the Safety of Abrasives (OSA), and Spectrum says that emphasis has been placed on facilitating product selection. Three of the new blades can cut virtually any material, but detailed information is given regarding their optimum performance so that the most appropriate choice can be made. Also available is an innovative point of sale display aid , which holds a selection of Ultimate blades so that stock levels can be seen clearly, and it incorporates a DVD player running a demonstration of the blades in action.

Dustcontrol’s quick connectors

Dustcontrol UK says that, although its ‘H’ rated vacuums are the main element of its dust extraction systems, care has gone into the design of the suction casings to capture the maximum amount of dust at source. They can be fitted to tools such as angle grinders, sanders, drills, combi-hammers and breakers. The exhaust duct firmly connects to the suction hose, which push-fits snugly on to the vacuum, removing the need for clips or fastenings.

Although lightweight and flexible, the hoses are designed to withstand the rigours of hire and are crushproof, wear-resistant and anti-static. For larger tools, such as floor grinders and surface preparation machines, Dustcontrol stocks spigots and adaptors for many different types.
