Green Zone:

Hogging the show

GenQuip’s reputation for innovation was confirmed once more at SED, as the company unveiled a host of new products.

Most of GenQuip’s latest launches are further developments in its range of Groundhog secure units, welfare cabins and related products. The Hoglift is an ingeniously simple system that enables cabins and bulky equipment to be lifted on to transportation vehicles from ground level, eliminating work at height. It comprises four galvanised sliding channels incorporating small lift trolleys with rings that can also secure the container to the vehicle during transportation. An integral base leg facilitates on-site levelling. The Hoglift has an 8.8-tonne capacity and can be fitted to new and existing Groundhog cabins, other cabins and equipment like chillers and generators.

New also are the RV3 and RV7 Roadhog welfare vehicles that can be driven straight to site for immediate use. With seating for three or seven people respectively, they are HSE compliant, with a changing area, canteen, rest area, lighting, heating and a flush toilet. Waste can be discharged via a hose to an appropriate outlet.

The Hogwash is an energy and water saving shower cubicle, which follows a programmed sequence of operation for maximum efficiency and minimal water use. After 30 seconds’ operation, an outlet valve opens to recycle the used water, and then closes again, while the shower continues for 2 minutes or more. Finally, the valve re-opens and waste water goes to a holding tank for eventual use in flushing the toilet in the cubicle. An automatic sanitation cycle before and after each shower ensures hygienic conditions. GenQuip says the Hogwash will save approximately 100 litres of water compared against a typical seven-minute shower.

The SED line-up included the GP360-12V Groundhog towable welfare unit, which has a bank of batteries to provide its power. A 2.5kVA generator charges the batteries as required for maximum efficiency, and low-consumption LED lighting is incorporated within the cabin. Under a new Smarthog brand, GenQuip showed the Focus 2 bulletproof sentry box, which can be placed in locations where security is an issue. The air-conditioned cubicle includes a telephone, fire extinguisher and rechargeable searchlights.

The stand also included a similarly large display from sister company GenSet, making it one of the biggest presences of any company at the Show. New products include the Dust Fighter, which creates a fine, high-volume water spray to suppress on-site dust without forming puddles that could potentially cause slip hazards. The company believes equipment like this will become increasingly important as cities like London introduce environmental protection measures.

Also new is GenSet’s AST 8000 lighting tower, a fully hydraulic, towable machine whose 9m mast extends horizontally as well as vertically. The company says that the product’s four 2,000watt metal halide lamps provide a higher than average level of illumination, sufficient to throw light downwards into deep quarries and mines. Power for the machine is provided by a 25kVA generator.

Other GenSet products displayed included the Trenchlink interlocking mini road plate system, which does away with the need for trenching reinstatement; the compact Tri-Lynx welder that can be used for polyethylene electrofusion and metal arc welding, as well as providing generator output; and the Pac80 paving breaker and compressor, which is designed to operate at significantly lower pressure than conventional units, reducing noise and vibration. GenSet remains strongly committed to environmental issues, and recently came 31st in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies Awards.
