Makita targets dust

Makita’s 447M dust extraction unit is designed to meet the levels of air cleaning required by the EN60335-2-69 standard, permitting a level of dust no greater than 0.1mg/m3 of air. The unit has a maximum airflow volume of 3.1m3/minute and a PET-fleece filter with a maximum permeability of 0.1%. The casing is designed to reduce noise.

Also available, the 5017RKB 190mm circular saw has an acrylic dust capture cover over the blade housing to capture sawdust during operation. It can be connected to a dust extraction unit or can retain the debris for subsequent removal. Similarly, the new SG1250 wall-chaser uses the body section that covers the rotating abrasive wheels as an integrated dust collector which, when connected to the 447M extraction unit, is claimed to remove 99.9% of fine masonry or plaster fines.

Digbits builds business for Bricks

A Shropshire-based building contractor, appropriately called Brick Plant & Contractors, is hiring out a Digbits Bavtrak 025 concrete crusher as well as using it on the company’s own projects. “The new Site Waste Management Plans introduced this month will transform the construction industry, so on-site recycling is not only important to improve sustainability but essential to avoid heavy fines,” says Managing Director Barney Brick, whose son Paul is pictured with the machine. “It is also cheaper than hiring a skip and buying in new materials, as bricks and concrete can be made into usable hardcore on site.”

The 2.9 tonne Bavtrak 025 uses a patented crushing mechanism to reduce concrete, rubble and reinforcing wire into three variable grades of hardcore. “Many small building and contract workers do not have the finances or consistent workload to invest in this kind of equipment, but need it periodically,” adds Barney Brick. “The new regulations mean there is a real need for hirers to give builders access to machines like this.”

Norton’s quiet achievement

Launched at the Executive Hire Show in February, Norton’s CS 451 floor saw is the first of a new generation of Clipper machines designed for low vibration, following research at Loughborough University’s Off-highway Plant and Equipment Research Centre (OPERC). The machine is claimed to reduce vibration by 30% compared with earlier machines, and to enable an operator to use it throughout a typical 8-hour working day without exceeding permitted exposure limits. The position of the water tank improves balance and adds weight above the blade, and cutting depth is set by a hand wheel.

Norton has also introduced the Silencio silenced diamond blade range. The sound dampening is said to be especially effective in the high frequency band from 2-6kHz, which can be particularly penetrating. Noise levels are reduced by up to 15 dB(A) generally and by up to 25 dB(A)
in specific frequency bands. The laser welded blades can cut wet or dry and the 15mm high segments are designed for long life and fast cutting.

Orange urges green action

Orange Plant, a specialist hirer of arboricultural equipment like shredders, chippers and stump grinders, stresses the advantages of processing materials on site rather than transporting it in a bulky, untreated state to a facility elsewhere. “Visiting council waste depots and recycling plants, I have been amazed by the number of vehicle movements involved when a lot could be processed in situ,” says Managing Director, David Orange.

The company continues to increase the number of Timberwolf S426 shredders in its fleet. The machine’s ability to handle green waste, contaminated timber, pallets, cardboard, potted plants and plastic packaging means it can be hired to customers in diverse markets, including construction. The product, which can process at a rate of up to 3 tonnes/hour, is road towable and a tracked version is under development.

Pike’s green traffic lights

Pike Signals’ Tandem Duo radio controlled traffic light system combines battery powered, cable-less radio technology with a bio-diesel compliant engine. Low-power LED optics and night-time dimmers improve running time between charges and a monitoring system automatically starts the engine when the battery level becomes low.

Pike says that engine running hours are reduced from 672 to 96/month, and that the oil only needs to be changed every ten months, as opposed to every three weeks with a standard machine. This cuts down on the amount of oil that has to be disposed of, and the use of long-life LED bulbs reduces landfill waste.

Dronco’s quiet Evolution

Dronco Abrasives UK’s new Evolution Protect blade range features a specially developed steel core to reduce noise levels by up to 10db(A). Vibration is also said to be reduced, which lowers wear and tear on the blade segments and gives longer life, as well as lessening operator exposure to HAV. The blades can be used on hard and abrasive materials. The company also emphasises the importance of stock rotation and observing the ‘use by’ date that is typically stamped on the bore washer of a blade. After this period, performance will deteriorate, leading to longer cutting times and higher energy consumption, says Dronco.

Hilti’s new dust initiatives

According to Richard Wardle, Product Manager - Diamond Systems with Hilti (Gt Britain), “Dust is a major Health & Safety issue that affects thousands of operatives every year, yet many have a low understanding of the problem. However, the law in the UK is clear, with the exposure limits for respirable dust at 4.0mg/m3 and 0.1mg.m3 for respirable quartz dust. At the moment there is no 100% dust-free solution, but it is possible to reduce exposure by using a co-ordinated extraction system. Hilti’s insert tools with optimised airflow help reduce dust, while hood protectors can be used with dry cutting, grinding, sawing or drilling equipment. High performance vacuums dramatically reduce the amount of dust in the air.”

Hilti’s latest wet and dry vacuums range include the VC 40-U, and later in the year will see the launch of the more compact VC 20-U. Next month, the company unveils the DD 110-D dry diamond coring system, a lighter version of the DD 100-D designed for higher performance. It offers drill speeds of up to 1,360rpm and features a built-in dust extraction head. Hilti will also introduce a new range of electric diamond cutters this year. The DCH 230 and DCH 300 offer cutting depths of 85mm and 120mm respectively, and both feature a 2.6kW motor with a SmartPower control to match power to the material and pressure applied.
