Market Report: Work At Height

Latest products

Euro Towers low-level units in demand

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require a risk assessment to be carried out before starting a task, to enable the correct equipment to be chosen. Euro Towers reports this has led to increased demand for low-level products and podium steps, such as its Klik Fold, a lightweight folding 2m-long unit with six platform levels. The similar Mini Fold is only 1.5m long, while the Micro Fold 1000 podium steps have a 600mm square platform area and four working platform levels.

Quick work from Turner Access

In 1994, Turner Access’ PlusEight Modular Scaffold System was used in a successful Guinness Book of World Records attempt to achieve the fastest scaffold erection, when a two-man team built 100m2 of scaffolding in 19 minutes 59 seconds. It is designed to use fewer components than traditional tube and fittings, and weighs less.

Also available is the PlusEight Frame System that has even fewer components. Parts can be stored on racks holding 140m2 of scaffolding and they are fully compatible with the Modular System. Advance guardrail protection is incorporated, and Turner Access says it is actively targeting the Frame System at the hire industry.

Hampshire hirer chooses Monkey Tower

The Monkey Tower towable access platform weighs 300kg, is designed to be transported behind any car or van, and can be set up by one person within five minutes. It provides a maximum working height of 6.5m and can be locked into place at 250mm intervals. Its minimum width of 700mm enables it to go through a standard door or gate.

Hampshire-based Up and Out Access operates three Monkey Towers in its fleet. “They offer tradesmen an easy to use solution to working at height,” states Up and Out’s Andrew Barnes. “Many window installers have stopped using ladders or towers now, as they find it quicker to simply put the new window and their tools in the Monkey Tower, wind the platform to the correct height and then climb up to start work.”

Compact Leonardo machine from Bravi UK

The Leonardo, from Bravi UK, is a battery operated, compact self-propelled personnel lift. It weighs 450kg and can be loaded under its own power into a van or work vehicle. Maximum platform height is 2.9m and slide-out panels enable the basket area to be extended to 1.71m by 0.68m. Maximum carrying capacity is 180kg.

The wheels can be locked in position when moving between long aisles and the battery provides up to 250 operations per charge. The machine was originally designed by the owner of a drywall panel installation company, to enable safer, more productive work at height.

Modular GPC system

GPC Industries has become the UK distributor for Netherlands-based Altrex BV, which manufactures access towers, modular suspended platform systems and ladders. A recent addition is the Modular Triangle Bridge system, which incorporates stackable trusses available in lengths of 2, 3 and 4m, providing free spans of up to 12.5m. It can be used with separate vertical support stands, and between rolling towers or façade scaffolds. Platform height can be set between 3-5m, and the system can be assembled on the ground and raised to working height by a hand winch.

Pop-Up has the plus factor

Derived from the existing Pop-Up compact scissor lift, the Pop-Up+ is designed for a wider range of indoor, low-level access applications. Maximum platform height is 2.5m, 1m greater than its sister product, and it reaches full height in 24 seconds, with operation being controlled via a handset. Integral stabilisers are designed for quick deployment, and LED lights confirm correct setup. Weighing 365kg, it has a stated safe working load capacity of 240kg and can perform approximately 150 lifting operations per battery charge. When stowed, its measures 1200mm long by 700mm wide.
