SMC
targets
hire
The
lighting
and
power
generation
equipment
manufacturer
is
expanding
the
product
range
it
offers
for
our
industry.
SMC
held
an
open
day
in
Grantham
recently
to
promote
its
power
generation
and
lighting
equipment
ranges,
aimed
at
a
market
that
continues
to
grow
strongly.
The
pace
of
building
and
highway
construction
shows
no
signs
of
slackening,
with
much
work
being
done
at
night
to
reduce
the
time
taken
to
complete
projects,
leading
to
demand
for
temporary
lighting.
In
addition,
as
our
Market
Report
on
temporary
power
equipment
showed
last
month,
there
is
a
growing
need
for
generators
to
provide
electricity
in
areas
without
a
convenient
mains
supply,
or
as
emergency
backup.
The
flagship
of
SMCs
lighting
line-up
is
the
Telelight
TL-90
mobile
vertical
mast
tower,
specifically
developed
for
the
hire
industry.
Featuring
a
robust
canopy,
its
compact
footprint
of
only
2.5m
by
1.32m
facilitates
storage
and
means
that
more
machines
can
be
fitted
onto
a
transporting
vehicle,
says
the
company.
The
tower
can
be
erected
to
its
full
9m
height
in
12
seconds
and
the
mast
features
360°
rotation.
The
130-litre
fuel
tank
provides
up
to
85
hours
running,
and
four
1000W
metal
halide
lamps
are
incorporated
in
the
tower
head.
Biodegradable
oil
is
used
in
the
hydraulic
system
and
the
machine
features
120%
bunding
of
all
engine
fluids.
The
unit,
which
has
Railtrack
approval
for
work
on
the
UK
rail
network,
has
a
noise
level
rating
of
60dBA
at
7m.
The
TL-90
was
designed
to
eliminate
the
possibility
of
its
erected
mast
inadvertently
coming
into
contact
with
overhead
power
cables.
Should
an
operator
attempt
to
move
the
machine
with
the
mast
erected,
a
sensor
connected
to
the
braking
system
will
activate
an
automatic,
controlled
descent
of
the
mast.
As
an
additional
safety
feature,
a
loud
warning
alarm
alerts
personnel
whenever
the
mast
ascends
or
descends.
SMC
Managing
Director,
Nick
Hodges,
expects
that
sales
of
the
TL-90
will
have
grown
by
30%
by
the
end
of
this
year
compared
to
2006,
and
that
a
further
20%
increase
is
anticipated
in
2008.
At
its
open
day,
SMC
officially
launched
its
super-silent
Genpac
Powermaster
generator
range,
which
includes
models
with
outputs
from
20-500kVA.
The
company
says
that
other
machines
with
higher
outputs
can
be
made
to
special
order.
The
standard
line-up
encompasses
17
models,
again
designed
to
withstand
the
rigours
of
the
hire
industry
and
with
a
high
specification.
The
generators
are
housed
in
robust,
heavily
soundproofed
canopies
with
forklift
and
crane
lifting
points
designed
for
easy
accessibility.
Machines
feature
Perkins
water-cooled
diesel
engines
and
four-pole
Stamford
alternators
designed
to
provide
smooth
uninterrupted
power
for
long
periods.
The
40kVA
GSS-40
is
also
available
with
an
optional
Yanmar
engine,
and
the
100kVA
and
350kVA
GSS100
and
GSS-350
generators
can
be
fitted
with
Iveco
power
units.
Standard
features
on
the
Powermaster
range
include
24-hour
run
fuel
tanks,
external
fuel
connections,
oil
extraction
pump,
hard
wire
and
socket
outlets,
and
the
engines
are
fully
bunded.
A
battery
isolator
is
incorporated
and
an
electronic
control
panel
provides
information
on
engine
and
generator
operation.
A
fault
history
log
is
also
produced,
and
an
optional
skid
pack
is
available
for
the
machines.
The
generators
can
be
fitted
into
containers
to
provide
on-site
security,
and
can
be
supplied
with
a
choice
of
950,
2000
and
3000-litre
bunded,
industrial
metal
fuel
tanks.
Models
from
the
Powermaster
range
will
be
on
view
on
the
SMC
stand
at
the
Executive
Hire
Show
on
6-7
February,
and
the
company
says
it
is
planning
for
significant
sales
growth
within
the
hire
industry
during
the
next
three
years
