Exhibitor Profile: Seddons

Generating interest

Seddons Plant & Engineers continues to expand the range of products and services it offers to the hire industry.

Part of the Bolton-based Seddon Group, a construction focused organisation with a turnover in excess of £220m and employing 1,500 people, Seddons supplies equipment to the plant and tool hire, grounds care and building industries, representing brands such as Honda, Volvo, Stihl and Winget. As EHN reported last month, the group has expanded further by acquiring Rugby-based Brownpower, a dealership specialising in engines and portable generators. “The combined expertise of the two companies will not only provide additional staff to help customers identify parts and engines, but also the ability to educate and increase customers’ knowledge of Honda technology,” contends Phil Winnington, Sales and Marketing Director of Seddons Plant & Engineers. “Hirers and our other customers will benefit from enhanced availability and quicker service.

“There is also business to be had hiring portable generators, to both professionals and domestic customers, as greater strain on the National Grid is likely to increase supply interruptions. More people are taking up leisure pursuits like caravanning and require instant power away from their homes. The latest Honda EU generators are designed for ease of portability, considerably reduced noise and lower exhaust emissions, benefits appreciated by environmentally conscious customers.

“Rather than supplying commodities, we are delivering a difference, offering products with environmental, security and Health & Safety benefits. Our range includes MBW plate compactors designed for low levels of HAV to reduce the risk to operators. We also install Kosran theft prevention systems on plant, which again increases our value proposition to hirers, who in turn can promote the benefits to their customers.”

Being launched at the Executive Hire Show is another anti-theft device, designed to protect smaller items of equipment from light-fingered opportunists. Available in the UK exclusively from Seddons, the Tool Lock comprises a flexi-cable lock and a remote controlled alarm operated by a key fob. The user loops the product around the equipment and sets the alarm, which contains a motion sensor.

Should the tool be moved, a piercing 110dB alarm sounds for five seconds before re-setting itself. The Tool Lock can support up to six individual key fobs, which can be programmed by a master key to accommodate multiple users. Power comes from a rechargeable battery designed to give a week’s use per charge. Seddons sees huge potential for the product as thefts of construction equipment increase, and it can be offered for sale at the point of hire.

The company’s display will include the Honda TD500HL walk-behind compact tracked dumper. Manufactured by Seddons in association with Honda, it features hydrostatic drive, rubber tracks for traction with minimal ground disturbance, and at only 680mm wide the machine will fit through a standard doorway. The discharge height of up to 1220mm enables the TD500HL to tip its maximum payload of 500kg into skips and onto raised working areas. “We will be launching a free DVD at the Show featuring the machine as a solution to users’ needs, and which hirers can play in their shops to generate business in the same way that a live demonstration would,” contends Phil Winnington.

“We will promote the in-depth Honda engine training that is available from both Seddons and Brownpower. This gives our customers a more thorough understanding of the products, and it enables hirers’ technicians to service equipment more effectively and get it back on to the fleet more quickly. In addition, we will run a competition on our stand, and the winning hirer will win a package of promotional materials to publicise the Seddons products they offer. Our marketing team will devise a dedicated pro-active plan for their business. This shows that we are not just selling products, but we also provide full support to our customers, helping them, and the hire industry, to flourish.”
