SED Preview:

Ready for Rockingham

EHN previews significant products appropriate for hire to be launched at SED from 16-18 May at its new Rockingham Performance Park location, near Corby.

Makita to highlight HAV management

As well as promoting its latest power tools on its own stand, Makita UK is supporting daily seminars on HAV in the business centre on the showground. The free 60-minute sessions will include presentations from the Health & Safety Executive, medical professionals and power tool specialists. "Our aim is to simply deliver the HAV risk avoidance message without the waffle that has been surrounding this subject," contends Marketing Manager Andrew Helby. “Presenters will focus on ‘how-to’ guidance for site safety managers – how to manage trigger time, how to calculate the exposure points system, how to control vibration risks and how to avoid prosecution and claims.”
To secure a place ring Makita on 01908 214004.

Visitors to the stand will have a ‘hands-on’ opportunity to feel how Makita’s Anti Vibration Technology (AVT) can reduce vibration levels, even on larger equipment like the 30kg HM1810 demolition breaker.

Imer Direct adds more to the mix

Imer Direct GB and its suppliers design and manufacture cutting, lifting, mixing and shifting equipment for all types of construction sites.Prominent on the stand will be the Small 50 and Koine3/4/5 mortar and plaster spraying machines, which can also spray various types of paints and finishing materials. The Silent 300 model comes with 30m of hose as standard and is designed for conventional and pre-mixed mortars. The Mover 270D/DE models, which are offered in diesel or electric versions, are designed for pumping floor screeds and come with 40m of hose as standard. The Silent and Mover units are towable and can be supplied with road-going lights.

JCB completes zero tail swing line-up

JCB will launch three mini excavators completing its zero tail swing line-up and which are in the 2.5 tonne, 3 tonne and 3.5 tonne classes. They are positioned between the existing 801 range and the new 8040 ZTS model. Weighing just under 2700kg, the 8025ZTS is narrower and slightly lighter than the 8027ZTS it replaces. It can be transported behind a small truck on a 3.5 tonne plant trailer, with a selection of buckets or attachments. The machine has a 28hp engine, as does the 3200kg 8030ZTS, which is targeted at hire companies. The 3700kg 8035ZTS has a 32hp engine and replaces the conventional 804 Super.

JCB’s new generators, which EHN featured last month, will be displayed. The range comprises 42 models in 18 power nodes from 15-500kVA, available as single or three-phase at 50Hz. All are offered as open units or with sound attenuated canopies. Models from the Vibromax line-up of soil and asphalt compactors will also be on the stand.

Larger display from Wacker

Wacker has taken a larger stand at SED this year, combining a static site and a demonstration area to illustrate the diversity of its construction products, including compactors, pumps, breakers and drills, together with lighting towers and generators. New products include a remote controlled triple plate, petrol driven submersible pumps and a generator for powering internal vibrators requiring a 42V three-phase supply.

The company will highlight developments designed to enhance efficiency and safety, including a new folding handle for the CT36 and CT48 concrete trowels that is designed to provide a balance of control and convenience.

Arc-Gen powers up

Arc-Gen’s new Powermaker 6DV, a super-silent dual voltage generator, can supply both voltages up to maximum output at the same time, offering 230V and 115V outputs. The brushless generator has built-in voltage compensating windings, is said to offer a stable power source. Soundproofing reduces noise emissions to 62dB at 7m at full load. Powered by a Kubota diesel engine, it has a 25-litre fuel tank providing a minimum of 12 hours operation. Auto-idle is fitted as standard, and other features include automatic shutdown for low oil pressure, high water temperature and battery charge failure.

Ammann to launch latest minis

Amongst the highlights on the Ammann Equipment stand will be the new Semi-Vio SV15 and SV17 mini excavators in the 1500kg class. These will replace the B15-3, B15-3 Ex and B18 Ex Series B machines. The newcomers have a reduced rear swing radius of only 980mm, enabling use in confined spaces, and they can pass through 1m doorways.

They are designed to be more fuel-efficient than their predecessors with reduced levels of noise and emissions, lending themselves to use in populated locations. A new load-sensing hydraulic system allows the simultaneous operation of all machine functions, and the optional cabs are designed for maximum space.

The SV15 weighs 1480kg (1580kg with cab) and has a maximum digging depth of 2000mm. It is seen as particularly suitable for general hire fleets. The SV17 is 120kg heavier and its longer dipper arm gives a 2400mm maximum digging depth. It has a second transport speed and a variable hydraulic pump. The SV17 Ex is similar but its undercarriage is variable between 750-1090mm.

Ammann will also unveil the Vio15-2A zero tail swing mini, which has a 1680kg operating weight and the undercarriage can be altered between 950-1200mm. New lighting towers will also be displayed.

Kubota’s long reach

Kubota will exhibit and demonstrate models from its popular mini excavator range, as well as previewing the new zero tail swing 8-tonne KX080-3. Overall, the line-up covers 17 base models from 850kg to 8 tonne. Other machines being shown for the first time at SED will be the 5-tonne U50-3, a zero tail swing model fitted with a long reach arm, and which has a heavier counterweight for stability and improved torque for increased traction. The company will also promote its new key-based security system.

Comprehensive GenSet line-up

GenSet will show a comprehensive line-up of its generators, from a standard 6.0kVA machine to the ‘ultra silenced’ 100kVA USP sets designed for noise sensitive areas. Also on display will be PowerCube and PowerCell generators built for installation in mobile and static buildings, along with engine-driven site water pumps and electric submersibles.

The company recently won a £500,000 order from a major railway contractor for its portable welding machines, and a selection from the range will be displayed, together with lighting products such as the versatile MiniTower, the LinkTower and the VT-1 SuperLight.

Sister company, GenQuip, will feature its Groundhog towable welfare units, including the new Piglet. It has the same features as the six-person Groundhog 360, minus the hydraulic installation equipment. Feedback suggested that some contractors carried out work entailing multiple stops during a single day. Although they still needed the Groundhog’s welfare facilities, the hydraulic lowering system was an unwanted dimension when the task was completed and it was time to move to the next job.

Instead, the Piglet has a simple four-set outrigger system. The module is moved into position and secured by dropping an outrigger at each corner to the ground. Power for the welfare unit comes from a GenSet PowACcom generator, running on petrol, diesel or LPG.

Kanga for high productivity

Kanga Loaders will promote its range of stand-on skid steer loaders that are designed for ease of use and high work rates. The company claims that the versatility of the machines enables hirers to achieve fast returns on investment, and that users appreciate the increased productivity of the units compared to using manual labour.

The Kanga machines can be fitted with more than 50 quick-fit attachments that enable the user to dig, carry, till, trench, bore holes, plant trees, sweep, break and carry out other tasks. Live demonstrations will be held throughout the Show, aimed at illustrating the performance of the range.

Cut it with Husqvarna

The Husqvarna Construction Products stand will feature diamond cutting and drilling equipment under the Partner and Dimas brands. Products will be demonstrated throughout SED, including machines designed for low levels of vibration, emissions and noise.

The Partner power cutter line-up includes petrol, hydraulic, air and electric-driven models for applications ranging from cutting concrete and stone to brick, asphalt and steel. The K750, which was reviewed in our April issue, features the manufacturer’s Dual Charge two-stroke engine technology that is claimed to give 70% lower exhaust emissions than standard two-stroke engines, and a 25% reduction in noise compared with previous models.

Dimas products encompass tile saws, masonry bench saws, wall and wire saws, floor saws and diamond drilling systems, together with diamond blades and core drill bits for all applications.

Lombardini targets construction

In recent years, Lombardini has concentrated its efforts on developing engines and accessories suitable for the construction market, in particular with the 15LD series of diesel single cylinder units. This series, currently made up of six-cylinder displacements from 225-505cm3, covers a power range from 4.7-11.8hp.

The latest development is a silenced version of the 15LD350, enabling Lombardini to offer both the 15LD350, certified to EPAII for the US market, and the 15LD350S for Europe, to optimise noise reduction, in keeping with the most recent and stringent noise level legislation. It will be shown at SED together with other engines in the 15LD series, along with other water-cooled models.

The company has five production plants throughout the world and has a total annual output of more than 200,000 engines. Models available include petrol and diesel single cylinder units, air-cooled multi cylinder models and diesel water-cooled multi cylinder engines designed for maximum environmental friendliness.

Advances from Speedy Pumps

Speedy Pumps will highlight technically advanced pumping equipment solutions available for hire. Occupying pride of place, the Liquidator 6 is a 150mm super-silenced diesel unit designed for fuel efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Developed by GenSet, the machine has a stated noise level of only 59 dBA at 7m and can run for more than 38 hours on a single tank of fuel. The Liquidator 6 can be fitted on a twin axle road-tow trailer for easy positioning, which can do away with the need for lifting equipment or cranes.

The stand display will also include examples from Speedy Power’s line-up of power generation equipment, along with details of its new Safeset device, which, the organisation says, could save customers thousands of pounds each year.

Try out Fairport’s latest

Fairport Construction Equipment’s LHAV 300 plate compactor has been designed specifically to address the issue of HAV. The 300mm-wide machine has a claimed vibration rating of 3.2m/s2 and weighs 50kg. It comes with a water tank and a cast base is available as an option. Visitors will be able to try the machine for themselves on the company’s stand.

The SED display will also include cement mixers, concreting tools, bench saws, tile cutters, hydraulic power packs and related tools, and the re-launched Goodenough pump range comprising models from 2-6in.

Volvo meets noise targets

Volvo’s compact excavators have been redesigned to meet the 2006 European Machinery Directive on noise levels. The company says that its EC25 and EC30 now come in under 94dB(A), while the EC35 and EC45 do not exceed 96dB(A). Also on display at SED will be models from the ECR range of short swing radius compact excavators from 2.5-8 tonnes, designed to meet the needs of operators working in confined areas. The ECR58 and 88 have an automatic two-speed travel system, whereby the speed is automatically shifted from high to low according to the travel load.

Volvo will also launch its CareTrack remote monitoring system. It uses satellite and cellular systems to transmit information from a machine to a password protected website that customers can access. Interacting with Volvo’s on-board diagnostics, it enables fitters to reach machines more quickly and with a greater knowledge of any problem, armed with the appropriate tools.

LCH expands its fleet

At SED, the specialist hirer LCH Generators will announce an investment of over £3.5m in its UK hire fleet, as it adds 365 new items. The company is purchasing a further ten ISO-containerised diesel generators, each with a rated output of 1000kVA, manufactured in France by SDMO Energy. It is also adding another 280 standard FG Wilson canopy sets, covering a range of output power ratings from 10-500kVA. These additions will take LCH Generators’ fleet to nearly 3,000 units. The company will also invest in a further 75 transcube 3,000-litre fuel tanks.

UK Sales & Marketing Manager, Lewis Scremin, contends, “This will not only enable us to provide an even better service to our customers, but will also extend our capability in a wider range of applications for temporary, mains-independent, standby and uninterruptible power solutions.”

Build it with Belle

A highlight of the Belle Group’s display will be an area representing a construction site. The company’s specialist staff will demonstrate how its products can be used during key aspects of house building and will include concrete mixers, screeds, compaction equipment and floor saws.
