Executive Report:

Scotland the brave

Despite sleet, hail and arctic winds, visitors still attended the Scotplant exhibition in Edinburgh last month.

Martin Plant develops training

Martin Plant Hire promoted the comprehensive range of courses available from its dedicated training division. Quality & Safety Manager Stewart McNaughton (pictured, left, with Training Manager Dave Crichton) says that the operation has been expanded considerably over the last 12 months, with a purpose-built training facility.

“The training initiative arose out of our internal staff development programmes,” states Stewart McNaughton. “We offer courses from PASMA, IPAF and other organisations, together with specific management and sales training. The HAE recognises us as a provider of certain courses, as does the St Andrew’s Ambulance Association. Safety training dovetails well with our general hire activity, and we can offer customers a complete package. It also reassures us that the client is competent to use the equipment.” Based in Motherwell, Martin Plant Hire has 16 depots throughout Scotland.

HSC promotes Dosko range

The Hire Supply Company (HSC)’s line-up included Dosko stump and root grinders. For safety, the cutting wheel on the Honda-engined machines is at the front, well away from the operator, and it is fitted with a dead-man’s lever. A 13hp model has a 36cm diameter cutting wheel with the ability to cut 50cm above ground and 40cm below, whilst a 9hp version with a 30cm diameter wheel has a 30cm capacity both above and below ground. HSC says that belt drive increases reliability and reduces maintenance.

HSC is also distributing the Earlex Professional HVLP SprayPort, designed for fast redecoration of walls, ceilings, doors and fences. Offered in 230V and 110V, it comprises a main turbine unit and a carrier stand, which are connected via quick-release clips. To reduce problems associated with incomplete cleaning after use, the machine uses recyclable spray guns, which can be sold at the point of hire and are available in packs of 12.

Tornado nails it

Tornado Fixings, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, promoted its EXP88 cartridge tool system, together with KR6 (NK type) nails and red/black strip cartridges. Designed for ease of use, the machine is supplied in a lockable toolbox and comes with a range of accessories, including a cleaning brush, lubricant spray, goggles and a spares pack. The Leeds-based company offers a comprehensive range of drilling accessories and fixing products, which can be supplied in own-brand packaging.

Load up with Takeuchi

The TL150 is from a range of rubber track loaders being introduced to the UK by Takeuchi as multi-purpose workhorses. The machine has an operating weight of 4850kg and is fitted with a 96.5hp turbocharged diesel engine. A tilting cab facilitates access to the engine and hydraulic system, and an emergency shutdown system helps protect against damage due to low oil pressure or high coolant temperature. Joystick controls are said to give precise operation of loader and travel functions.

Higher Concept’s successful Syrinx

Higher Concept Software, the supplier of the Syrinx hire management package, reports that it has many customers throughout Scotland, as far north as the Orkney and Shetland Islands. Overall, Windows-based Syrinx is currently used by more than 300 plant and tool hire organisations and is designed for ease of use. A task-orientated interface leads the user through the system, with inter-screen navigation to related information. It is designed to manage all aspects of a hire business, including contract management, hire fleet control, sales and purchases. Sales invoices can be transferred to Sage with the click of a button.

Several customer relations management (CRM) features are incorporated, the latest being the ability to create and store prospective client records, such as quotations and mailshot data.

SMC tower targets hire

SMC’s (Sandhurst Mfg Co) new Telelight TL-90 is a fixed vertical mast lighting tower designed for the hire market. The company says the machine has a noise output of 60dBA, can run for up to 80 hours before refuelling and that the mast can be erected in 12 seconds. Compact dimensions enable 14 units to be loaded onto a Euro flat bed lorry. Power comes from a Kubota diesel engine and the machine has four 1000W metal halide lamps.

The product has been designed to eliminate the possibility of the mast inadvertently coming into contact with overhead power cables when in the upright position. Should an operator attempt to move a TL-90 with the mast erected, a sensor connected to the braking system activates an automatic controlled descent of the mast, which can be rotated through 360°. A warning buzzer alerts personnel during the raising and lowering operations.

Productive duo from Double A

The Fife-based Double A Trading Company, a specialist distributor of grounds care equipment, highlighted Timberwolf chippers on its stand. Area Sales Manager Hugh Ramsay reports that the machines are proving increasingly popular amongst hirers, particularly the tracked and towed versions of the TW/150. “The tracked TW/150 TR is ideal for off-road sites and work on embankments. The undercarriage is retractable and the feed hopper can be removed, enabling access through doorways and gates.”

Double A has recently become a dealer for Kanga mini skid steer loaders, and displayed Kanga Kid and DL720 models at Scotplant. The latter machine has non-marking tracks to facilitate work on turf and soft ground. Kanga units can accept a wide range of attachments, ranging from buckets and brooms, to trenchers and stump grinders.

Young’s first crush

Young Plant Sales supplies a wide range of equipment to the hire industry, including machines from Kubota, Belle, Probst, Stihl and Thwaites. Occupying a small corner of its substantial display was a Kubota U15-3 zero tail swing mini excavator, alongside a Bavtrak compact tracked crusher made by Digbits and distributed by Cautrac. Young, which was appointed as a Cautrac dealer in January, showed how the machines could be hired as a pair for landscaping and construction tasks.

Mark Dutton, Field Sales Engineer with Cautrac, reports that four Bavtraks were recently supplied to Hirebase, part of the Buildbase builders merchant operation. The machine is designed to reduce concrete and bricks into hardcore ranging from 20-70mm in diameter.
