REASONS
TO
BE
CHEERFUL
We
trust
that
the
whole
industry
had
a
relaxing
and
enjoyable
Christmas
and
New
Year
holiday
and,
as
we
kick
off
2006,
everyone
is
ready
to
hit
the
ground
running.
You
will
need
to
be,
as
this
year
will
bring
another
series
of
challenges
to
our
industry,
especially
in
Health
&
Safety
issues.
Some
see
Health
&
Safety
as
a
problem,
whereas
we
see
it
as
an
opportunity
and
this
is
why
we
are
copying
another
title
from
a
well-known
song
to
use
as
an
EHN
headline.
...One
On
the
subject
of
Health
&
Safety,
and,
in
particular
in
response
to
the
Work

Height
regulations,
no
hirer
has
done
more
than
Speedy
to
represent
our
industry
to
a
wider
audience
by
promoting
a
better
understanding
of
this
legislation
at
the
construction
site
level.
We
are
proud
of
Speedys
achievement
in
winning
a
Construction
Marketing
Award
in
the
category
Campaign
of
the
Year
for
its
Safety
From
The
Ground
Up,
said
to
be
the
largest
Health
&
Safety
focused
campaign
ever
undertaken
by
a
tool
and
equipment
hire
company.
Speedys
campaign
was
aimed
at
providing
clear,
concise
and
comprehensive
communication
of
the
new
regulations
at
all
levels,
from
site
through
to
the
boardroom,
or,
as
the
title
indicates,
from
the
ground
up.
Speedys
package
of
information,
distributed
to
site
by
its
sales
teams,
included
a
16
page
booklet
on
the
regulations,
a
pocket
guide
for
use
on
site,
posters,
desk
pads
to
remind
office
and
site
personnel
of
the
new
regulations,
stickers
for
use
on
hard
hats
and
lockers.
Hundreds
of
Tool
box
talks
were
also
given
at
site
level.
The
campaign
has
not
only
helped
to
differentiate
Speedy
in
the
market
by
demonstrating
its
commitment
to
the
issue,
but
also
led
to
a
significant
increase
in
sales
revenues,
with
access
equipment
up
28%
on
the
previous
year.
We
are
not
suggesting
that
every
hirer
should
invest
as
much
as
Speedy
did,
we
are
merely
pointing
out
the
opportunities
that
await
you
if
you
can
also
raise
your
game.

Table

Current
Annual
Turnover.
This
indicates
the
growth
levels
that
we
anticipate
for
the
top
ten
tool
hirers.
A
year
ago,
we
projected
an
aggregate
turnover
of
£653m
for
these
ten
companies.
The
actual
total
turned
out
to
be
£663m.
Our
2006
Current
Turnover
Table
forecasts
an
aggregate
value
of
£730m,
a
predicted
overall
growth
rate
of
10%.
Extrapolating
statistics
is
a
hazardous
undertaking,
but
it
seems
clear
from
these
tables
over
the
past
few
years
that
the
tool
hire
industry
continues
to
grow
at
a
rate
above
that
of
the
overall
UK
economy.
Estimates
of
the
actual
size
of
our
industry
vary
widely.
Last
year
we
held
to
our
view
that
it
was
worth
in
excess
of
£1
billion.
The
projections
from
our
Current
Turnover
Table
lead
us
to
revise
our
valuations
significantly
upwards.
Experience

observation
over
the
years
with
regard
to
the
overall
plant

equipment

industries
in
The
Plant
Hire
Investment
Report
would
suggest
that
the
top
ten
companies
account
for
rather
less
than
50%
of
the
industrys
revenues.
If
we
apply
a
similar
criterion
to
the
UK
tool
hire
market,
this
suggests
a
value
approaching
£1.5
billion.

No
one

more
passionate

the

of
our

we
urge
all

find
the
time
to
visit
the

we

of

all

of

await
