Hire Show Preview:

All-ExCelling showcase

EHN previews many of the major product launches planned for this month’s Hire Show that will make a visit to the event essential for all hire industry executives.

Takeuchi loaders take centre stage

Best known to UK hirers for its mini excavators, Takeuchi also offers compact tracked loaders which, it says, are particularly popular in the US and on the Continent. They will form the main highlight of the company’s Hire Show stand. The smallest model is the TL130, a 67hp machine with 3000kg breakout force and 2100kg tip operation. A wide boom is said to give greater strength and allows room for more powerful hydraulics.

Also on view will be the cab version of the TB23R mini excavator, a 2.6 tonne machine that can be towed on a standard plant trailer. A quick-hitch facility means that attachments can be changed quickly, such as buckets, post punchers and breakers. Designed for maximum legroom and visibility, it has an adjustable high-back seat, a radio and a heater. Its short tail swing design facilitates work in restricted areas. Other minis will be on display, ranging from 1-5 tonne.

Hiretech beats the drum

Hiretech will launch what it describes as the world’s first multi-speed drum floor sander. The HT8 Multi-Speed can be used on all wooden floors, from parquets to laminates, and is aimed at professionals and homeowners. Kits are also available to upgrade any existing HT8 or DU8 machine. Visitors can try the machine on the stand, and have the opportunity to win one.

Hiretech will feature the Parkett brand of floor lacquers and associated products from Bona Kemi. The company’s updated HTW steam wallpaper stripper will also be shown, featuring new steam plate rails and redesigned labelling for improved point of sale appeal. Existing HTW-5 models can be upgraded easily and special offers will be available at the Show.

Youngman shows its Knowledge

Youngman, now an independent company following its acquisition by a four-strong management team last October, will unveil a new Work at Height training programme, called The Knowledge. It is a partnership with the Health & Safety Executive and Safety and Access, a training company. The one-day course gives an overview of the Work at Height Regulations, and explains why and how to use risk assessment, how to select and advise on the right product, and discusses equipment inspection.

The Hire Show also sees the launch of improved branding for Youngman's Boss tower system, providing easy recognition of components and high visibility branding. Also unveiled will be the new Combi 100, described as an affordable, professional combination ladder, that replaces Youngman's existing Utility range. It is offered in three sizes (2.0m, 2.5m, and 3.0m closed heights) and can be configured as a stepladder, extending stepladder and an extension ladder. Also new is the aluminium 3-Way Ladder, which can be used as a stepladder, a stairway ladder or an extension ladder with a maximum safe working height of more than 3m.

Eurofloor to show complete range

Eurofloor, the exclusive UK and Ireland distributor for both the Clarke American Sanders and Porta-Nails Inc ranges, will showcase both line-ups of floor sanding and floor installation tools at this year's Hire Show.

Clarke claims to offer one of the most popular ranges for hirers, with machines designed to cope with the demands of the rental industry. Exhibits will include the EZ-8 drum sander, the versatile B2+ edging unit and the popular OBS18 orbital sander. Visitors will also be able to see the latest addition to the range, in the form of the Super-E extension edger.

The full range of Porta-Nailer wood floor installation tools will be included in the stand display, including the latest Portamatic Hammerhead TL model as well as the original Porta-Nailer and Portamatic Hammerhead 2.

Cautrac highlights Yamaguchi carriers

Cautrac will display several Yamaguchi tracked carriers, including the 500kg payload WB05HL and the 700kg capacity WB06DHL. The compact machines feature high-lift skip mechanisms with maximum discharge heights of 1250 and 1317mm respectively. Also on show will be the Bavtrak mobile crusher, developed in conjunction with Digbits, and which Cautrac distributes. It is designed for the on-site reduction of broken concrete and bricks into useable hardcore. The unit is mounted on a Yamaguchi undercarriage and Digbits says the machine can produce material from 20-70mm in size, at a rate of up to 8 tonne per hour.

New low-level product from Euro Towers

Euro Towers expects to launch an additional low-level access solution to complement products such as its Klik Microfold 1000 and Minifold. The former offers platform levels of 250mm, 500mm, 750mm and 1000mm and has a platform area of 600mm square. A telescopic handrail ensures the correct guardrail height at each level. The Minifold is a collapsible platform that facilitates access through doorways and along corridors. It has six optional platform levels from 0.2-1.7m.

Roger Verallo has become Managing Director of Euro Towers following the retirement of Tony Williams, who has been retained as a consultant specialising in non-standard designs. “Business is currently buoyant, with much of the interest being driven by the Work at Height Regulations,” states Roger, who was previously Sales Director. “Most of our hire customers report that they are extremely busy, and more new companies seem to be starting up. Export sales are strong, and our training centre, which provides PASMA and IPAF courses under the supervision of our National Training Manager Jason Woods, is always in demand.”

Earlex sprayer offers portability

Earlex will launch its Professional HVLP SprayPort spraying system designed for the accurate re-decoration of walls, ceilings, doors, fences and furniture. Available in 110V and 230V, it can apply emulsions, water-based glosses, enamels, acrylics, automotive paints, lacquers, varnishes and polyurethanes. The machine has two separate parts, namely the main turbine unit and the carrier stand. These are connected via quick-release clips for portability. The air hose and mains cable are stored integrally to avoid misplacement. The product comes with a guide to enable the user to quickly become familiar with HVLP spraying.

Powerful display from Robinson

GW Robinson, also known by its pump.co.uk web address, will exhibit for the second time, with a considerably larger stand. It will display Koshin contractors’ submersible pumps, petrol and diesel centrifugal pumps and heavy-duty submersible models for industrial and commercial applications.

Following increased demand for small petrol generators, Robinson has produced the EN2500, a low-cost model with a Chinese Loncin engine and a MeccAlte alternator. Other generators with Loncin and Honda power units will also be shown. Loncin produces petrol engines from 5.5-13hp, designed for most replacement applications. New Loncin ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) will also be revealed.

Brendon makes less noise

Brendon Powerwashers’ new 3000KDQ is claimed to have a noise level of less than 75dBa at 7m, and under 85dBa at 1m. Powered by a Kubota diesel engine, it produces 3000psi at 15 litres/minute. Overall, the company’s range spans models with electric, petrol or diesel power sources, with pressures from 1000-5000psi. Many models feature Brendon’s ‘live’ hose reel designed to facilitate rewinding of the delivery hose and to prevent hoses being swapped. Most machines will fit through a doorway or are compact enough to work on a platform.

Gray Campling’s range of Titans

Visitors to Gray Campling’s stand will see the full range of Titan paint sprayers, for which the company is sole UK importer. As well as the usual electric airless sprayers, the petrol/electric Powrtwin 6900GHD, which can spray fire retardant materials and plaster, will be shown.

Also displayed will be the Admiral pneumatic airless sprayer, used in industries such as shipbuilding and steel fabrication. Shown for the first time will be the AHR24 battery-powered mixer, which can be used with paint, plaster, artex, dry lining, epoxies, chemicals and sealants. The 54-950 sand blaster will also be on show.

Interlink’s Wembley way

Interlink Alloy Systems’ low-level access solutions include its podium steps, which are now offered in three variants and can be modified to meet individual needs. The Mk 1, 2 and 3 versions offer platform heights ranging from 0.9-1.9m, giving reach heights of 2.9-4.9m. The company says these can be a safer alternative to conventional steps and ladders, providing a 360° work area within the handrail enclosure.

The company’s Stairspan, Stairdeck and Fold Easy products will be promoted, and additions for 2006 include a ladder stay. Interlink also manufactures customised products, some of which have been used by contractors working on the new Wembley Stadium.

Sebach offers enhancements

Sebach’s new re-circulating portable toilet is claimed to offer benefits such as a smooth internal finish, hidden internal rivets, more internal space, toughened corners for manual handling and enhanced skids for easy loading. It features secure anchor points, crane lifting eyes and a strengthened door and hinges. The company says that improved manufacturing techniques and a new agreement with Sebach in Italy have enabled a price reduction compared with its predecessor. Also new for 2006 is a revised pricing structure for Sebach vacuum modules, designed for fast and effective servicing.

Hire Supply all fired up

The Hire Supply Company (HSC) will launch a new division, together with three new grounds care products, a site safe and a prototype lighting mast. HSC FireSafe will sell, rather than lease, fire extinguishers and related equipment, so that customers will not be tied into long-term agreements. The company will also arrange competitive servicing for orders of ten or more units at one location.

HSC’s new pedestrian rotavator has a 5.5hp Honda engine and features two gears (one forward and one reverse) together with a cone clutch. It has a tiller width of 50cm and has height adjustable handlebars with a 180° swing facility for manoeuvrability. New 9hp and 13hp stump grinders will also be displayed.

Comments will be sought from hirers on a prototype 5m mast light, which can be fitted with either four 500W tungsten halogen heads or HSC’s 27W E-lite fluorescent lights. The manually operated mast features separate locking pins and has specially welded feet, with a 2.4m leg stance for stability. Also on show will be the Elite range of products, including E-Lite high efficiency lights, Elite fume extractors and pallet trucks, and Barreto heavy duty grounds care equipment.

HSC has received updated information from the supplier of its E-Lite 27W lights. It originally stated that 100 lights could be run from a 2.8kVA generator; however, a generator of 4kVA minimum should be used to power a maximum of 30 lights, connected one after the other.

Duradiamond promotes cutting additions

Duradiamond will exhibit its Multiswivel, designed to enable dust-free dry drilling with one set of core drills and the swivel fitting. Managing Director, John Clark contends, “Dust is increasingly recognised as being hazardous to health, so if operators want to work in a dust-free environment and be equipped for efficient wet drilling of hard materials and dry drilling of soft masonry, then they can use the Multiswivel kit.”

The system has been used on a wide range of materials including granite in Aberdeen, flint aggregate concrete on the London Underground, hard engineering bricks in Lancashire, and general building materials and natural stone throughout the UK. The company claims that this shows the versatility of the product.

The Duradiamond line-up for the Hire Show will be completed by a new 1900W Multiswivel 3-speed drill designed for wet and dry diamond drilling applications.

Imer highlights revenue earners

The Imer Direct (GB) stand will emphasise smaller equipment designed to offer good returns for tool hirers. Making their Hire Show debut will be spraying equipment for applying paint, plaster, mortar, fireproofing, insulation and other materials. The range, made by Imer in Italy, starts with the Small 50, which can pump to a distance of up to 25m. The Koine 5 model can deliver materials over 50m.

The Spin 30 is an accessory for small silos and is designed for mixing prior to application. A transfer system to move the material to the point of delivery is available. Also on show will be powered stirrers, including the hand-held Mix 25 and the small Mix 35, together with paddles and accessories. “This equipment is aimed at a specialist market where hire rates do not need to be heavily discounted,” contends Imer Direct Managing Director, Bob Hughes. “The Small 50 fits in an estate car, and the Koine 5 goes in a small van. They are ideal for work at height, with the machine anchored on scaffolding.”

The Rollbeta cement mixer with a plastic drum will be shown, alongside a machine with a steel drum. Visitors will be invited to strike both with a hammer as hard as they can, to discover the durability of the former. Also on display will be Imer floor saws, tile saws and masonry saws. Larger production runs have resulted in lower prices for 2006. Imer scaffold hoists will be included in the Hire Show line-up, together with other lifting equipment.

Demon finisher from MBW

The ScreeDemon finishing screed will be among the concrete tools that MBW will feature on its stand. The basic product consists of a Honda power unit and a carry handle, to which can be fitted beams of different size, up to 6m long. This makes it easy for hirers to configure the product to customers’ specific requirements, says MBW. Also being shown will be the GPS range of plate compactors, including the GPS300, a 300mm wide machine that weighs only 50kg.

Upwardly mobile with Turner Access

Turner Access’ range includes the Octo 250 mobile tower system, which has a climbing frame design and features eight non-slip rungs at 250mm centres. It is offered in 1.45m wide and 0.85m wide options, each available in 1.5m, 2.5m and 3.2m platform lengths. The Sigmadeck 250 is designed for quick assembly and provides a working platform up to 1.6m. It is designed solely for internal use, can offer guardrail protection at all times and has compact dimensions when folded.

The Omegadeck 250 aluminium bridging system enables ‘up-and-over’ access for work in offices and factories with minimal disruption. The company’s AlphaStep is a one-man, low-level access solution.
It comprises only five components and offers a choice of four platform heights up to 1m.

Thwaites dumpers in demand

Thwaites will make its Hire Show debut, showing its compact hydrostatic dumpers. Sales Director Ian Brown contends “tool hirers represent a growing market. More are adding machines like these to their fleets for work on projects like home extensions in areas with confined access, and at ‘brownfield’ sites and modern housing estates, which can be cramped. Hirers can achieve a five-day hire to builders during the week, and domestic users can take them for a weekend.”

The Alldrive 1 tonne high-tip hydrostatic dumper has a minimum width of 982mm and can load into standard skips. Power comes from a 21hp Yanmar diesel engine. The four-wheel drive machine has steel panels for durability. Also on show will be the Alldrive 1 tonne Powerswivel dumper. The hydraulically operated skip rotates through 180° by means of twin slewing cylinders. An automatic failsafe braking system is incorporated into the rear drive motors. The engine is easily accessed for servicing and numerous security features include individual key start, an isolator switch and a locking bonnet.

“If a tool hire business operates a delivery vehicle and a standard plant trailer, it is easy for them to transport these dumpers direct to a customer’s site,” states Ian Brown. “We have supplied units to Hewden, Speedy, Selwood and many local independents.”

Kosran offers security

Kosran’s diesel plant immobilisation security system automatically shuts off a machine’s fuel supply and locks the hydraulic and electrical circuits, 30 seconds after the engine is switched off.
To start the machine again, the user enters a code on a keypad.
A ‘valet’ mode allows hirers to choose if they want to charge for anti-theft system activation, by issuing their customer with a code that is valid solely for the duration of the hire period. Service engineers can have a personal code for out-of-hours access to any machine.

Hanix offers mini finance

Hanix will exhibit its H15BPlus-2 mini excavator, which weighs 1630kg with cab and is designed for easy operation and quick access for service. It has a 17hp Mitsubishi engine and provides a maximum digging depth of 2350mm, with a maximum digging radius of 3920mm. The tracks can be adjusted hydraulically for optimum stability. This month sees the launch of a finance package for the H15BPlus-2 with 12in and 24in ditching buckets and a tailored trailer, backed by a three-year warranty.

Young Black nails it

Young Black says that, following the success of the Rebar tying tools and Powerlite nailing systems for concrete, steel and wood from its Max range, it will launch Max gas-powered nailing tools for timber applications. Clipped and full round head models are available, and both are said to have been designed to withstand the rigours of hire. The products are backed by a full range of consumables.

Marcrist claims quick performance

Marcrist International has chosen the Hire Show to launch its new Mi850 diamond blade. It combines real diamond for speed and synthetic diamond for long life, while specially developed M-segment technology is said to give advanced cutting performance on all building materials, as well as steel. This cutting efficiency is said to enhance productivity and to give cost savings.

With every Mi850 blade, Marcrist is giving a free, professional quality diamond blade of the same diameter, but without M-segment technology, as well as a stopwatch so that users can time the difference for themselves. Managing Director, Mario Halbeisen, states that, “if any purchaser is not totally satisfied after 30 days, they can return the Mi850, keep the free blade and the stopwatch and claim their money back.”

Midland Power chooses Vanguard

Midland Power Machinery will promote its BM300B cement mixer, which features a Briggs & Stratton 2.4hp Vanguard engine. The overhead valve design of the power unit is said to give cooler and cleaner running, offering improved fuel economy and longer engine life.

The mixer features a 5ft3 capacity drum with bolt-on, replaceable paddles that facilitate cleaning. The reduction box has been designed to enable the engine to start easily under full load conditions. The mixer is supplied complete with a heavy-duty stand that has large-diameter feet for extra stability.

Enviromax hits the right temperature

Enviromax will launch a new climate control unit. The Enviromax 10 can provide 10.1kW of air conditioning, or 12.2kW of heating, via a reverse cycle heat pump, from a 16A 240V power supply. It can either be positioned internally within a building or located externally and ducted via diffuser grilles. A modular design is said to enable fast installation.

Garry Broadbent of Enviromax contends, “We have designed and manufactured the Enviromax 10 to give the user significant benefits. The fact that it will cool or heat via the same outlet makes portable temperature control much more achievable and cost effective, and can give the operator a 12 to 14 week payback period.”

Künzle & Tasin for floor care

Milan-based Künzle & Tasin will highlight its wood floor sanding equipment, in which it has specialised for more than 60 years.
It also offers machinery for the grinding and polishing of marble and granite floors. The company has a distribution network serving more than 60 countries, and it claims to supply many hire companies throughout Europe.

Kanga keeps it simple

Kanga Loaders will show how its mini skid steer loaders can simplify materials handling and loading operations, leading to reductions in the amount of labour required and decreasing the risk of injuries from lifting and hand arm vibration (HAV). All models have several safety features, such as a self-levelling bucket and an auto auxiliary cut-out.

Products include the 7 Series ‘Fat Track’ models, featuring non-marking tracks, and the 6 Series, which offers extra ground clearance and high transport speeds. Over 40 attachments can be fitted to the machines, including a kerb lifter, self-levelling bucket, trencher, post-hole borer, turf cutter, cement mixer and a flooring stripper.

Quick access with NSG

NSG UK’s Pop-Up is a battery powered self-erecting, low-level access solution designed as a replacement for ladders and steps. It is said to take eight seconds to reach its full 1.63m platform height, and overall width is 0.7m. Up to 300 lifts can be achieved on a single charge, says the company. Castors provide mobility, and the Pop-Up has a safe working load of 240kg, being approximately equivalent to one person plus tools and materials. Operation is controlled via a simple handset. The product’s compact size enables it to be transported on a small flat back vehicle.

New Bobcat mini under wraps

Bobcat says that it will announce an important addition to its mini excavator range at the Hire Show, designed specifically for the UK market. Details are not being disclosed until the first day of the exhibition. Norbert Donaberger, Business Manager Excavators for Bobcat in Europe, contends, “the new excavator will meet diverse applications in the rental, construction, building, landscaping, utility and municipal markets. It will also have important implications for the way we operate in the European market.”

Bobcat’s existing mini range comprises 17 models, from the 820kg 316 to the 12.5 tonne 444. As well as viewing the excavators, visitors can obtain information on the company’s skid steers, compact tracked loaders, telehandlers and other products in its compact equipment range. A line-up of over 60 attachments will also be represented.

FML offers peace of mind

FML Insurance Services will promote a range of insurance products designed to make it easier for tool and plant hire companies to obtain adequate insurance cover for their fleets. FML’s Michael Scott contends that sensible risk management lies at the core of its insurance schemes, with premiums being influenced by claims experience, security measures in place and good management practices.

One of the services offered is aimed at smaller tool hire companies which, in the past, may have felt that insurance costs are disproportionate to the benefits. FML says it can offer policies with an excess of £1,000 in respect of theft and malicious damage, and £500 in respect of all other losses.

The maximum sum insured is £1m, with an accumulation at any one location being limited to £250,000. Other packages will be promoted at the Hire Show.

Freeze Master’s long term benefits

Freeze Master will demonstrate its electric pipe-freezing machine, which can be used to stop the flow of water for long periods to facilitate plumbing tasks. It can remove the need to drain complete water systems, which could lead to airlocks and other problems. The company says that the success of its equipment is due to a patented active-capillary microprocessor control at the heart of each unit. This is said to achieve lower head pressures, resulting in enhanced cooling and rapid decrease of temperature.

The control unit enables the operator to freeze hot and cold pipes simultaneously, without the risk of forming a concentration of refrigerant in the freeze head attached to the cooler pipe, says Freeze Master. Large and small pipes can also be frozen in the same way. The electronic valve system takes the place of the basic capillary and works by delivering pre-programmed quantities of refrigerant to the freeze heads, maintaining a more stable performance.

Aerial Access targets the UK

Powered access equipment manufacturer, Aerial Access, is to launch a major drive at the Hire Show to target the UK market. To date, 90% of business has been with export markets. However, the company believes that demand for access platforms will continue to grow significantly as hirers and users still come to terms with the Work at Height Regulations.

Highlighted on the stand will be a K13 trailer mounted machine. The company also plans to provide visitors with an insight into new products planned for 2006. Aerial Access was acquired by the Tanfield Group as part of the Gateshead-based SEV Group in October 2004. It has since moved all former SEV manufacturing operations to its 250,000ft2 factory in Stanley, County Durham.

Universal opens UK outlet

Universal Hydraulic System Ltd, a company owned by Dingo Mini Diggers of Australia, has opened a distribution centre near Warwick to service the UK and Ireland. The company’s K9-4 machine, which will be featured on its stand at the Hire Show, is designed to power a wide range of attachments and is suitable for work in confined locations.

It has two hydraulic pumps with a flow divider, producing 47 litres/minute, and has a 3,400psi auxiliary circuit. The machine can fit through a standard doorway, enabling easy access inside buildings and to back gardens. Dingo has been manufacturing its compact excavators for 15 years.

IR to launch new compressor

Ingersoll Rand (IR) will launch its 7/31E portable compressor, which replaces the previous 7/31 model. It has a bunded base and customers can choose an optional control panel designed to provide more comprehensive information with additional fault signals. Other options that were available on the 7/31, such as the choice of generator, aftercooler, overspeed valve, spark arrestor and twin toolbox are also available on the 7/31E.

Designed to meet new noise regulations, the 7/31E has a low maintenance direct-driven 85mm air end. It also offers increased running time from its 50-litre fuel tank. Servicing is facilitated by the incorporation of a new lower canopy and a single-hinged upper canopy design. The machine provides a free air delivery of 3m3/minute at an output pressure of 7 bar. Also on show will be the G33 from the IR Environmental Generator range, for demanding applications in construction and outdoor events.
